We had the good fortune of connecting with Beth Edwards and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Beth, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I made the decision to start my own business when I was laid off from my job on November 1, 2008. A lot of people weathered the Great Recession and had to make changes in their careers, I decided to go back to school for the purpose of starting my own law practice in part so that I could control my career and destiny. After obtaining my undergraduate degree in 2011 and taking the law school entrance examination, I decided to go to work in a familiar corporate setting to see if I really wanted to spend the time and money on law school. After less than a year I was certain, and I enrolled in law school for the following fall. After obtaining my law license in the fall of 2016, I was nervous about going out on my own, so I took a job with a large civil litigation defense firm. About 10 months into this job, I knew I wanted to run my own law firm; so I left the comfort of a guaranteed pay check and set off on my own.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own a real estate law firm and title office in Fate, Texas. We help clients all over the state of Texas, and beyond! My law firm focuses on real estate, probate, estate planning, and business, as well as family law. Our primary objective is to help our clients secure, preserve, and protect their real estate assets, whether the real estate asset is their homestead, or a multi million dollar portfolio of investment properties. What sets our firm apart from other law firms is that our firm offers title insurance and closing services, as well as provides a wealth of knowledge from all faucets of the real estate industry. I was raised in the mortgage industry, and my first job out of high school was as a mortgage loan processor for a large national mortgage company. I have first hand experience and knowledge from mortgage origination, servicing, relocation, title and closing, and title examination. I have seen it all, and I pass that knowledge on to my staff so we can help our clients make the best decisions for their needs.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live and work in a great little town east of Dallas called Fate. Fate is in Rockwall County, with a county seat by the same name. It is an excellent area to raise a family and enjoy life. I am very lucky to be able to work and live in this area, as most in the suburbs commute into work from their home. I chose to live and establish my law firm in Fate because of the county’s reputation as an excellent pace to live and raise a family. Fate is growing and I am excited to be a part of that growth. Also, my sister, sister in law, cousins, and friends live out here. The town has the most thoughtful development plan; each new subdivision and development connects with the last to create a cohesive and walkable town. We have amazing parks, and small businesses I love to visit. When folks visit me here, I like to take them on the walking trails along the neighborhood, up to the food truck park where we can get the best BBQ, Korean fusion, coffee, and margaritas! In the summer time there is a fun splash pad that my son loves, and a stop at the It’s Fate Creamery for some award winning ice cream. And for breakfast we have to visit the locally owned Four Czechs bakery for the best kolache and klobasnek. In the evening I’d take them to Beer Geeks where the owners (who are also local!) set up game /trivia nights and live music while we enjoy some interesting brews. There are so many great shops in this town, I’m sure I’m missing some, but they are ALL worth a visit, and they are all locally owned.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My biggest supporter in my journey to where I am today is my husband Jim Edwards. We were dating when I decided to pursue a career as a licensed attorney. We married after graduating from college, and supported me during my time in law school, even agreeing to move from Dallas to San Antonio, and back again. When I decided to hand my own shingle and open my own law firm he didn’t hesitate in his support. He never questioned my abilities or my goals. I could not have done it without him!
