We had the good fortune of connecting with Bec Gombar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bec, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose to pursue dance, being an artistic career, because I feel it poses the least risk of complacency. The arts, in general, are constantly evolving and offer fresh, experimental projects and career opportunities that are unique to any other field. Being an artist, it is exhilarating to trust in the unknown of what the next job or contract will be or lead to. This idealism has it’s downside, but is essentially what being in the industry consists of. The joy and adventure that a creative career brings is why an abundance of people choose the arts for life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think something that sets me apart from others is my versatility and knowledge of many styles in dance. Many people do not have the opportunity to train consistently in genres from ballet, tap and jazz, so preserving this ability offers me more job opportunities. I’m very proud to be a part of four New York-based dance companies; Peridance Contemporary Dance Company, treadFAST dance co., Project TAG, and Sandsilk Dance. I am excited for their futures and where my experiences with them will lead to. However, getting to this place in dance was not easy, being an international person in the USA. It is a constant work in progress to stay in this country to continue doing what I love with what I have established for myself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely head to DUMBO where we would eat at Shake Shack, go shopping in Soho, enjoy a ride on the NYC Ferry, and see a Broadway show.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother is a huge part of my success in the arts. She is an empowering dance studio owner, so she literally created the opportunity for me to begin dancing. I trained under her faculty until I was 18 years old, and after high school graduation, she whole-heartedly supported my move to New York City to further and refine my dance training and begin my professional career. I owe so much to my mom for her guidance towards reaching my dreams.
