We had the good fortune of connecting with Barbara Clark and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Barbara, how do you define success?
Fulfilling personal life goals and achieving what makes you happy, and just being a positive influence in life is success to me. Working in a hospital for many years and caring for people’s love ones is something that makes me happy. To be a part of changing lives for the better. Making cakes for people’s special occasions that puts smiles on their faces for that moment is success for me. I love helping and making people happy. Overcoming my generational trauma to better my children’s life is success because they will become everything more than myself without the extra burdens.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Small back story. I have always been a hustler since the day I started my first job at Taco Bell at 16 years old. Coming from a mother who had me at the age of 15, being the oldest was a burden I had to carry and help out financially as needed. I became an exotic dancer at the age of 19 while I tried to attend college at the same time. My focus was off and I quit school and continued working. Drank a lot and got myself into a lot of legal trouble because of it. Fast forward, after having both my kids I started working as CNA at a hospital for the last 11 years. My thought process behind starting my cake business was all about pressure. I got arrested for my 3rd DWI and knew I was about to become a felon. Working in the hospital industry I knew I needed a backup plan because I am single mother of two kids. I decided to turn my hobby into a business because I needed another way to make money just in case I was let go. So I ran with my hobby and researched the new trends at the time to perfect my craft simultaneously still working full time. My tax guy told me to get a DBA and I did. Working in the hospital I used my coworkers as my guinea pigs to try out my recipes and gave out a lot of treats before I perfected my recipes so they would be worthy of profitable sales. I got 5 years felony probation and let me tell you it was very challenging to say the least. All the money, therapy and classes that I didn’t think I needed I did it. I couldn’t blame anyone but myself for my actions, so I fought through it and successfully completed it on May 15, 2023. I also went to school last year and became a Licensed Esthetician. Ultimately my next move is to completely work for myself as an esthetician and pursue my cake business further to a store front possibly. With hard and dedication it will pay off.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a real simple kind of person. I love being multi-cultural and support small business. Clyde Warren park is a great place I would start with. All the food trucks and live music is great. I have to take them to try Henderson’s chicken and Sweet Georgia Brown for sure. Go to Legends or Brickhouse in Desoto for a night out and go for some bowling at Plano Super Bowl, a 24 hour bowling alley in Plano,TX. End the week with a bang at Neo Soul Sundays at Nava Cantina in the Colony.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I’m at today without my kids and my family. My kids are my everything and my full purpose in life! My support system of my brothers and my mother are the reasons I was able to get through my rough patches in life. Having a good family support system is a blessing that i don’t take for granted. I have a very good friend named, Wanda Payne, RN, who is the reason behind my moist cakes! She is the one person who told me that I needed to concentrate on making my cakes moist and that would keep my customers coming back for more. I did just that! Researched and researched for the best recipes to ensure just that. My other great friend, Tish Weber, RN, who owns her own med spa business always pushes me to do greater things in life and the reason I went to school to become an esthetician. I love all my close friends and family. You are my strong powerful circle.
