We had the good fortune of connecting with Avery Key and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Avery, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking

I took the biggest risk taking in a pup 2 and a half years ago. You see, I had no means of owning or responsibly caring for another life, heck I couldn’t care for my own. However, the summer of 2020. I took a unusual risk by taking in the prettiest but yet smallest pit bull puppy I ever seen. She was the runt, she was a fighter and had this urge to LIVE. She’s the reason why I am who I am today. She was the key to my independence.
From living with close friends to eventually asking my brother to foster, which turned into me living with my sibling for 3 months then to moving on my own. She pushed me in the right direction. I am forever grateful for Nala. Her role in this risk was life saving. She repurposed me and she knew that summer that I was her human.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Growing up I watched my aunts go and get the bag. Learning early on that everything in life is marketable. When I say everything EVERYTHING!

So when I took in Nala in 2020, I already had the idea of creating an Instagram to advocate for the breed and to also just see where things go. Never would I imagine having 11,000 followers though it’s not a lot – it opens opportunities. We’ve partnered with many brands and small pet companies. I felt that it was important to let pit bulls be the face and bark pup ( spoke person ) for brands that will typical go for a lab or a breed that isn’t deemed as “aggressive”!

Somewhere in between 2020-present time, I’ve taken in Nala’s litter mate/ sister Abby. The duo now run the pack over at meetnalarae instagram. At the moment we have 3-5 active pawrtnerships, all are paid ambassadorships. All funds are invested back into Nala and Abbie.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Palo Duro Canyon or the National Seashore at the gulf.

Both places has been our getaway since having the girls, and it’s the best get away for friends and family. Spring break or even a week in the fall to enjoy God’s creation and explore.

We would pack a cooler of items thats camp safe. Typically beef jerky is in the mix and what better way is to hike with the pups, come down to camp crack over a cider, and enjoy a camp stove style stir fry with beef jerky and freeze dried goods!

Now this may sound like the unpopular get away. But, if you’re outdoorsy like I am you’ll enjoy the scenery!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I think about my life, random occurrences where I could be left stranded and abandon. I can always give my flowers to my Grandmother Cynthia. She took me in from a child to young adulthood and forever will be my SHEro.

My late aunt rashonda who passed away in September. Can we just light a virtual candle for her? She was a go getter like many women in my family. She was a cheerleader and no matter what life update you gave her she was proud. Rip Aunt Rashonda.

Lastly
I can also give props to my dogs. It may sound silly but having 2 dogs that rely on you is an experience that’s magical. The bond between human and dogs is so profound. So yes I give props to Nala and Abbie for taken me in as an adult. For showing me unconditional love. For never turning their back on me as their owner no matter how many times I may get it wrong as a dog parent.
