We had the good fortune of connecting with Author Untamed and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Author, why did you pursue a creative career?
This may sound a bit cliché, but I didn’t choose a creative career; it chose me. My pursual of being an author and with all of my endeavors in the literary industry was sparked by an inkling that would not allow me to be comfortable or complacent. My writing was private and leisurely, so much so that only those closest to me knew that I wrote. When the urge to do more with my writing grew too great to ignore, I prayed over the matter and asked God to show me a sign that becoming a published author was the route he wanted me to pursue. The answer came a week later, I was passing through my family room, and the television was on an awards show. Tyler Perry was accepting an award, and he stated, “you know something is meant for you when you try to leave it alone, but it won’t leave you alone.” At that very moment, I realized I’d received my answer, and the road to my creative career was paved.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Getting where I am today professionally was not an easy path. Simply put, I had to work hard and smart to get to the level I’ve achieved, and I am still working to continue my growth. There are no shortcuts to cultivating your craft or building your brand. You must be committed to the process and the project because it isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon. I’ve made mistakes and failures along the way, and I’m sure I’ll have more. However, I overcome any challenge by learning from failed experiences, studying my craft, and seeking advice from those with more experience and knowledge than I have. It’s important to remember that one person can’t know everything about the industry, so you can’t be too audacious or apprehensive to seek expert training and instruction. Those are the things I’ve learned, that you must be committed to the betterment of yourself and your brand. I’d love for people to see me, my brand, and the story behind it and understand that it takes hard work and that achieving and reaching your goals isn’t impossible. If I’ve encouraged one person, I feel as though I’ve contributed a tiny part in planting the seeds of success that can be passed from one person to the next.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In my area, if my best friend came to visit, I would take her on a citywide tour from downtown to uptown. I’d divide it into fun days such as nature day, history day, fun and games day, shopping day, and literary day. We’d visit places such as Evans Towne Center Park to take pictures in the gazebo or walk the trails for nature day. Maybe they will have an event like Movies Under the Stars to watch outdoor movies at the amphitheater. We’d go to Phinizy Swamp Nature Park to view the wildlife, take a boat ride through the Augusta Canal, and stroll along the Riverwalk. On history day, we’d go to the Morris Museum to see the exhibits and round that out with historical landmarks downtown such as the old Cotton Mill and the James Brown statue. We would see if we could survive the Escape Rooms and dodge paintballs on fun and games day. On literary day, we’d visit our downtown library, local black-owned businesses, arts and crafts shops, and bookstore, and hopefully, the local book festival would be happening to visit there. Amid all these great places, I’d love to treat her to restaurants such as Humanitree House, Jackie M’s, and the Chef’s House, but we call it the “pink” house. Take a visit and find out why!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout first to my mother, who saw the vision of my writing career long before I did. Before seeing the dream come to fruition, she passed away, but I’m positive she is witnessing it from Heaven. Secondly, I’d like to thank my family for the endless and tireless support of my endeavors. Without them, there isn’t an Author Untamed. Lastly, I would like to thank the many bloggers, bookstores, industry friends, and readers who have propelled my career with word-of-mouth advertising, purchases, reviews, and most of all, encouragement.
