We had the good fortune of connecting with Asia Denise Griffin- Crockett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Asia Denise, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The biggest risk I have taken has to be changing careers from teaching to being a artist and graphic designer , it was a very big decision to make in my life and making the decision has mentally and physically made me better . I’ve always wanted to be a artist but my fascination with science and teaching was on my mind as well when I attended college , picking teaching wasn’t a mistake , that was a very rewarding time in my life, I solely made the decision to switch careers based on my feelings and my emotions at the time and I’m so happy that I did .
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My definition of art has changed over the years , my view on art and commissions has also changed as well . When I decided to take being a artist serious I initially started painting celebrity portraits as commissions , that was the only requests I was getting and the only thing that was selling at the time , I was creating my own personal work but that wasn’t selling .I came to the realization that i would use the profit I was making from the commissions and in return invest more into my craft and study more on oil paintings , making this decision was beneficial to my career as a artist . Most of my paintings are models and some are self portraits , I use reference photos of myself and use them while I am painting , some faces are distorted some aren’t , I leave that up to interpretation. For the longest I couldn’t figure out what my style was , and I didn’t want to keep doing commissions for the rest of my life either so it was really trial and error with a lot of my art , I tried alot of different things but painting the women around me felt right ,these are women I’m comfortable around and I can trust to be honest about my work .
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spot in Dallas is oni ramen in deep ellum , they have the best food and drinks and you are sure to have a good time .
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely want to give credit to my family and my friends for always showing up for me , reposting me on social media, and just all around support , I wouldn’t be able to create without love , I need love at all times , being loved by someone else is very powerful and it fuels me everyday to keep going.
