We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley VanderTol and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
I wouldn’t necessarily say I completely disagree with it but I tend to ignore this industry “rule” of sticking to one niche. I love photographing weddings and couples BUT I also love photographing families. When I started my business I found that most photographers focus on one or the other. I just say do what you love and make it your passion and be a student. Don’t stop educating your self.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well, moving to the Fort Worth metro where there are so many amazing photographers was a bit overwhelming. It challenged me to think outside the box of what can set me apart. Obviously, my editing and style of photography can set me apart but I wanted to take it step further and create a client experience that people rave about. Not just images but something they can experience. I want my clients to leave our photoshoot almost on a high of how much fun they had getting photos taken. If its a couple, I want them to leave thinking, “WOW, me and my significant other really connected on a different level.” I want to facilitate moments for people to have that they normally wouldn’t have getting their pictures taken somewhere else.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is tough because there is still so much of the DFW I haven’t experienced. I would say checking out the Stockyards is a must. Another of my favorite things is the State Parks in the area. We could walk some trains at Cleburne State Park.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I love this! I dedicate my shout out to my mother in law, Sandy VanderTol. She owned and operated a very successful photography business in Michigan. She ultimately inspired me to try it and I found that I loved it. She recently lost her battle to cancer this year and passed away. When she passed she left me her photography gear to restart my business back up in Texas.
