Meet Ashley Heflin | Founder of Performance Stall Mats

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Heflin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As someone deeply involved with horses and animal care, I recognized a recurring issue in traditional stall flooring: hard surfaces can cause discomfort, fatigue, and even joint problems for animals, especially those with arthritis or other health concerns. I saw the need for a solution that would not only provide comfort but also promote better overall health for animals by reducing stress on their joints and minimizing fatigue and need for a portable solution.
This led me to develop Performance Stall Mats. Initially, I wasn’t certain I could successfully develop a new product. However, during the COVID pandemic, I dedicated countless hours to researching the process and decided to take a leap of faith and give it a try.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What Sets Me Apart
Performance Stall Mats stands out because it was created out of genuine need and firsthand experience. As a horse owner and barrel racer I recognized the importance of animal comfort and convenience, especially while traveling. I designed these mats to be lightweight, durable, and easy to clean-features that directly address the real challenges faced by people in the equine community. My journey has always been about finding practical solutions that make daily life easier for both animals and their owners.
What I’m Most Proud Of
I’m most proud of building a business from the ground up while raising my child as a single mother. Launching Performance Stall Mats during a pandemic was daunting, but seeing the positive impact these mats have had on horses and their owners makes every challenge worthwhile. I’m also proud of the supportive network of women in the equine industry who have encouraged and uplifted me along the way.
How I Got Here Professionally
My professional journey has been anything but straightforward. I started with a simple idea and a lot of uncertainty, but I poured countless hours into research and development, learning everything I could about product design and the equine market. The drive to provide for my family and create something meaningful pushed me forward, even when the path was unclear.
Was It Easy? Overcoming Challenges
It was far from easy. Balancing single motherhood with entrepreneurship meant long nights and constant multitasking. There were moments of doubt, setbacks, and financial strain, but I overcame these challenges by staying focused on my goals, seeking advice from mentors, and leaning on a supportive community. Every obstacle taught me resilience and adaptability.
Lessons Learned
Persistence pays off-never underestimate the power of showing up every day.
Community matters-collaboration and support from others, can make all the difference.
Flexibility is key-plans will change, and being able to adapt is essential for success as both a parent and a business owner.
What I Want the World to Know
Performance Stall Mats is more than just a product; it’s a testament to determination, innovation, and the strength of single mothers. My brand is rooted in real-world experience and a desire to help others in the equine community. I want people to know that with hard work, support, and a willingness to learn, it’s possible to turn challenges into opportunities and create something truly impactful
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I were showing my best friend around Dallas, I’d definitely include a visit to XOXO Dining Room & Garden, the city’s iconic pink restaurant known for its vibrant, pink-themed decor from floor to ceiling-perfect for fun photos and a memorable dining experience
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to recognize several other female-led businesses in the equine industry. These women have come together to offer valuable insight, share contacts, and provide support whenever challenges arose. They truly understood the struggles and stepped up to help. Special thanks to MVP, The Back Tack, WhinneyWear, WPRA, KTPEMF, and many more for their collaboration and generosity
