We had the good fortune of connecting with Angelyca Adcock and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angelyca, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factors behind my business is my authenticity and self expression. For a really long time when I was in my teens, I always tried to seem normal and I wanted to fit in because I grew up in a very chaotic and unhealthy family. But after of years of repressing my feelings and not recognizing myself when I looked in the mirror, I started to explore my identity. I loved my friends and the groups that I hung out with but I was different. I didn’t actually like going to the mall and buying everything that everyone else had on. I loved going through Pinterest and Tumblr to find style inspiration from 90’s grunge icons and witches then going to the thrift stores in hopes to find something similar. When I found myself then I was able to make art that I actually connected with. Jewelry making is my art and I try to interpret how I see the world through it or what I need from it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I grew up on the internet and I made my first YouTube video when I was about 8 years old. It was a Katy Perry music video. I mean, it was awful. It was my sisters, a friend and I using the family camcorder to lip sync in the basement. It didn’t get any views, I just did it because I wanted to make a music video. I never stopped making things and if I wanted to do something then I did it. If I didn’t know how to do something then I teach myself how to do it, usually by tutorials found on YouTube. Being creative, putting myself out there and constantly creating is how I got to the place that I am today. Social media has really channeled all three of those aspects which is how my business has thrived. Social media is the core of how my business grew. Without the magic of the internet, I wouldn’t have anything. I would say this has been easy but also super hard. It feels so easy because I have been online for so long but then some days it feels impossible when the algorithm changes, no one is viewing my content and things or slow. When times that come, it’s time to try something new. To be successful online you have to be creative and know how to adapt. You have to know when it is time to pivot. While you need to be educated in business, you also need to be intuitive. Follow the numbers but follow your heart too.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It’s hard to just give one person a shoutout because different people in my life have helped me in many ways. My mom has degrees in business and marketing so she is always able to help me brainstorm and problem solve. I have my bachelor’s degree in Psychology and honestly I never thought of pursuing business until it happened. I also have two amazing friends that run a screen printing business and it is so cathartic to vent with other entrepreneurs because it can be isolating. They are also so great to bounce ideas off of. But also I have friends that aren’t in business but in are other creative fields that bring me a lot of support and critique. I could also just give a shout out to the internet as a whole because it is a free resource that can teach you about anything. Many creators on YouTube and TikTok have taught me things like website design, marketing, business, social media and more.
