We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Whiteman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angela, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always had a passion for baking, since I was growing up. I loved to make brownies with my dad in the kitchen and he’d always let me lick the hand mixer beaters after we were done. In college, I loved baking for my friends, then my coworkers after I graduated. That’s when I decided to open a bakery in central Texas with a couple friends and ran that for 6 years. I moved back to the DFW area 3 years ago and still baked in my free time. I started attending local farmers markets in the area on the weekends. I still have a love and passion for baking and hope to open a small store somewhere locally.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I moved back to the DFW area, I didn’t have a job lined up and it was scary. My cousin thankfully helped me get a job as a teller, due to my banking background after college. While I worked as a teller, I was still actively looking for something more permanent. I then landed a job for a health care company at one of their corporate offices, which I’ve been at for the past 2 years. This job has helped me with my passion of baking, as I work from home and can bake during my lunch hour or down time. It hasn’t been easy, especially with some local markets having a limit on the number of bakers they allow. I’ve been lucky in finding a couple markets that I can consistently attend to build up my regular clientele.

I’ve learned that if something doesn’t go your way, to push through and find other angles and solutions to help pursue your goals. I’m actively looking for ways to get my baked goods for others to see and fulfill their sweet tooth!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to the Fort Worth Stockyards to see the cattle crossing! I grew up in DFW but I honestly have never been to the Stockyards before 2 years ago. I thought it was so interesting to see the cattle walk in the streets then go see all the shops in the area. One of my favorite restaurants is Joe T. Garcia’s in Fort Worth. I love Mexican and tex-mex food, and Joe T’s really hits the spot! Plus they have really good margaritas! They have beautiful outdoor seating for great picture taking as well.

Lastly, I’d love to take them to the TX Whiskey ranch for their tours (if they open them back up!) We love their whiskey and taking an out of towner for their tour would definitely be on our list!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My boyfriend for the past 3 years, Joseph had been by my side since I moved back to the area. When I told him I was going to start attending farmers markets on the weekends, he happily came along and helped me set up and sell my baked goods, without me asking him to! He supports me in my endeavors and would love to help me achieve my dream of opening a shop one day.
