We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Documentary photographers are naturally curious. They want to explore the world around them and have a need to record what they were intrigued by. The records can range in various forms, whether it be emotion, colors, scenes, portraits, or landscapes. For me, these forms represent a spectrum of social and environmental issues. I believe that a photograph tells us something important about our world and allows us to think about the world in a new way by holding up a mirror to society. This genre of photography holds more potential than the misfortunes of the world. A passionate photographer can simultaneously show evidence of faraway places and the spontaneity of nature. I pursued a path in photography because of its broad application. My focus has changed over the last 10 years but it all started with documenting nature. From there it moved to journalism and soon converted to a fine art background where planning and sketching became the main focus. Primarily working with film, it moved to the darkroom and to small portrait and landscape projects. A few years later I started assisting commercial photographers in Dallas, NYC, LA, and San Francisco. Currently, my main goal to balance commercial projects while maintaining the drive for personal projects.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
1. Fake it til you make it. 2. may the bridges your burn light the way. 3. envy is ignorance, imitation is suicide.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My couch since March. Biking around the city is always nice. Finding some trails to hike or ride. Northern California is so beautiful and close to so many climates. Let’s go camping.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First on my list is the crocodile hunter. Steve Irwin was very influential early in my development of respecting the natural world. My teachers, professors, and mentors throughout the way. To my really solid, talented, spread-out friends in NYC, OKC, Dallas, LA, SF, and abroad. I have my friends to thank the most after all these years. It is more fun to go on adventures with some company than solo. Also, the efforts of trying and failing and failing and trying. It is a tough dance and sometimes feels never ending.
