Meet Amy Washington | Cake Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Washington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting our own baking business stemmed from my family’s shared passion for baking, which has always been a way to bring us together. Growing up, my sister and I cherished our family recipes and loved creating different cakes together. During the Covid pandemic, what started as a hobby began to evolve into something more meaningful. We saw an opportunity to spread joy and help others celebrate special moments through our baked goods and treats. To enhance our skills, we took decorative classes and invested in our business, allowing us to share our love for baking while creating delightful experiences for our customers.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As time went on, I started to invest in my skills through online courses, practical experiences, and embracing opportunities, which can be daunting. Coming from a non-entrepreneurial background, I’ve encountered various mistakes in our business, but gaining insights from those experiences and being open to exploring new approaches has been beneficial. Our business is centered around family, and baking with my sister serves as a tribute to our family history.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend visited for the weekend, I would surely take them to the local farmers market on Saturday morning to savor some regional delicacies and find some unique souvenirs. After that, we might head to World Springs to unwind. I really enjoy the vibe at World Springs and appreciate the relaxation offered by the various spas and pools. Later, I would take a much-needed nap followed by dinner at one of my favorite local spots like Izkina.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Even though Lasondra co-owns Feel Better Cakes, she is also my sister and my biggest supporter. She inspires me to keep experimenting with new recipes and designs. She pushes me to persist and explore new possibilities. Her faith in me and this business means everything. Without her encouragement and support, I wouldn’t have become the cake designer that I am today.
