We had the good fortune of connecting with America De La Rosa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi America, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’ve never thought of myself as a risk-taker, but after looking back on my life I can definitely say I am one.

I believe one of the biggest risks I have taken is having a baby at a young age. I had just graduated high school and I had no job, I was risking being able to care for a whole other person, that’s scary!.

Another risk I took was when I changed my career, I should say when I got an actual career. I always had jobs but never a career. Accepting any job I could find to pay the bills.

When I decided to enroll into cosmetology school, I took on a part time job and moved back in with my mom to help with bills while finishing my classes. It was hard and sometimes stressful, but it was definitely worth taking a risk and betting on myself.

I believe that being in the beauty industry comes with lots of risks. Hairstylist are risking something every day. As a hairstylist you risk clients not liking your work as well risking your own health. Being on your feet and working with your hands all day takes a toll on your body.

The biggest risk you can take in the beauty industry is opening your own business/salon. Taking the big step of being successful on your own is scary yet exciting. It’s the biggest risk you can take but it’s the most rewarding, in my opinion.

Having a successful business is the ultimate goal. I am on my way to reaching my goals and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. I have risked a lot and I plan on risking more if it gets me to where I want to be.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is making people feel gorgeous. If it’s a new hair color, a new haircut or waxing any part of the body. My goal is to make my clients feel gorgeous. I have gone to school and trained under great people. In this industry the training doesn’t stop, there is always something new and popular that we as hairstylist have to be able to do for our clients. The best thing I’ve learned is to invest in myself, either with the best tools or with continuing my education. That way I provide the best to my clients.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely say tour downtown Dallas. There are so many buildings and parks in the area that are a great view. The Perot Museum is also a very interesting place to visit. For night life I would visit bars in Deep Ellum.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a whole family I would love to dedicate this to, for having my back all my life, but mainly my daughter. Everything I do is to be better for her. I want to be someone she can look up to.
