We had the good fortune of connecting with Amelia Tatala-Beck and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amelia, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
I disagreed with the widely held premise that most artists are not able to make a living doing their work. I believed then, and still do today, that anything done with true passion, commitment, and generosity can become a business enterprise. If you do what you love, people will love what you do.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe creativity is infinite. If the artist owns the creative portion of the art, then the patron owns the tangible portion. The connection between the image and the observer will extend to the artist if the creation effort was authentic. The art should speak for itself.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Oregon. There are no bad trips or uninteresting spots to visit. Get a map of the state and put 5 x’s anywhere on the map. Go to those places in any order and you will love everything you see, most of what you eat, and all the different people you’re going to meet. It’s a great way to spend a week.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Historically, my husband, Marcus, has trusted my work more than I have. His unbridled optimism and continual support helped me commit to the concept of my artwork as a business. Over the years, I have managed a small degree of confidence in my abilities as his projections became true. Everyone on the planet should have one person that believes in them the way he does in me.
