We had the good fortune of connecting with Amari Edwards and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amari, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Growing up one of the things I enjoyed the most was getting my hair done. My mom scheduled me hair appointments at my aunts salon every two weeks. I would sit for hours getting my hair done. Over the years I grew a passion for hair. I started watching youtube videos to gain more knowledge on how to do my own hair. I spent countless hours styling, cutting and dying my natural hair. Sometimes my friends would even let me style their hair for fun. I even went as far as learning how to dye and install hair extensions. One year for my birthday there was a specific type of hair extensions that I wanted and no store in my area offered it. I was really upset that I had to settle for something else. That’s when the process of starting House of Amari began. I was twenty one years old, I had this growing passion for hair and I wanted to offer something to my city that other people would be interested in. I spent months researching how to properly set up a business, studying the industry and formulating a plan. This was something big for me and I wanted my launch to be perfect.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business offers hair extensions, lace wigs, tape ins, color services and more. What sets House of Amari apart from others is that we offer a variety to our customers. We have many different textures, lengths and colors to choose from. My business has flourished because I built it from a strong foundation. I made sure everything was in order before I launched my business so it was done the right way in the beginning. I learned that it’s easier to do it right the first time than to have to do it over again because a mistake was made. I’m most excited to see where my business will take me in the coming years. I know the journey will not be easy but I am prepared for what is ahead.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take someone that is visiting my city to downtown. There is a bunch of hidden gems there. The food is great and there’s even a few night life spots that are fun to visit as well.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a special shoutout to my mom. She always has my back 100% with everything that I do. She also gives me the motivation that I need every day. I know if I fall I can always count on her to help me up. I also would like to give a shoutout to my personal mentor Stephanie. When I called her and told her my plan of starting my hair company she told me to go for it. Whenever I feel stuck or need business advice she’s always there. We like to do these things called “check ins” where we talk for hours about our progress, business plans and more. These two women have played a very important role in my journey as an entrepreneur.
