We had the good fortune of connecting with Alondra Puentes Gallegos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alondra, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risk, while it is uncomfortable and scary, is inevitable, just like failure. Taking risks is part of life, and as humans, we are supposed to evolve. Personally, I am terrified of risks, but I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for taking risks. It is scary not knowing the outcome of a choice, but it is scarier knowing you didn’t take the risk and wondering what if.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an Indigenous performance artist, educator, and choreographer born in Heroica Matamoros Tamaulipas, Mexico, based in Dallas, Texas. I graduated from Texas Woman’s University with a BA in Dance Studies in 2021, and I will be graduating with my Master of Fine Arts in Dance and certification in Dance Management from Saint Mary’s College of California in May 2023. My work and research center around my Indigeneity, Ancestral Healing work, and Intergenerational trauma. As an Indigenous woman living in the United States, nothing has been easy. Every day is a challenge, and I have to learn how to navigate it. I am lucky to have a great support group and community that is there for me and helps me overcome challenges. I have learned many lessons along my journey, but the most important one is community. You cannot succeed or be happy without community, especially in a capitalist society. It is simply impossible and rather miserable when one is individualistic and not in the community. I encourage everyone to seek and build community and to decolonize their minds.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I don’t go out much but some of my favorite spots are these: Food: Coco Fire and Ice, Mariscos La Marea, Tacos La Banqueta
Drink: Anywhere in Deep Ellum
Visit: Bishop Arts especially on Sundays to check out the local vendors

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to Shoutout Dr. Danielle Georgiou, who has been my mentor since I was 18 years old. I am incredibly thankful for her support, mentorship, love, and friendship throughout the years, and still going strong. I would not be in this field or career if it weren’t for her amazing leadership, for her compassion, and love of the arts and education.
