We had the good fortune of connecting with Allison Hocking and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Allison, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking is the only way we grow. While I was living in California and selling horse trailers, we had a new model come in that was sponsored by Clinton Anderson, an Australian Horse Trainer. I started watching his program on RFD TV, and started using his methods on my horses. They worked beautifully. I decided that’s what I wanted to do, so I traveled to his tour stops across the Nation until he hired me on his program. I had to take a big risk and agree to be an unpaid apprentice for 6 months in Ohio. I decided to go for it, moved across the country and eventually down to Texas.

Fast forward, and Clinton brought me up to his office for my evaluation after the 6 month mark. He said, “Look Mate, you don’t have the natural talent to be a professional level horse trainer. You just don’t have the size, and the feel. You do however, like talking to people and are a natural salesperson. So I would like you to work in the sales department for me. You’ll make more money than horse training, and you’ll be able to do more with your free time.”

I was so thankful for that honest advice. I again switched gears and went into the Sales Department, eventually leading a team and handling sales for his multi million dollar catalog business. The growth I experienced at Downunder Horsemanship prepared me to take calculated risks in the future.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I work for local Radio station here in Fort Worth. What sets the Ranch and Hank FM brands apart is our dedication to local stories, to community efforts, and Texas music that is unique to our region. The Ranch is a leader in the Texas Music genre, so our partners are able to reach a loyal and active listening audience. Our events are top notch, and with everything from cars shows to concerts we shave a very diverse and interesting set of events every week. Hank FM plays the best in 80’s and 90’s country, with local DJ’s that really care about the communities we serve.

Sales is never “easy”, but with great products behind us I am confident we can help our partners meet their marketing goals. I got where I am today by pushing through my comfort zone, and making sure that I treated customers the way I would like to be treated. I take every dollar they invest with me seriously and put it to the best use possible. I have a wonderful team behind me that supports our sales efforts. Without them, none of this would be possible.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite part of Fort Worth is South Main. I would recommend staying at the Omni Fort Worth Downtown, it’s very close to this district and has a wonderful resturant downstairs, Bob’s Steak and Chop House along with one of my favorite hotel bars, Whiskey & Rye. We would have brunch at Wishbone and Flynt, in the So Ma district and probably Black Cat Pizza fordinner, right across the street. We would spend time at Nickel City, and meander down the road to Tulips for a show.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Norma Savage has been a wonderful mentor in my life. She has been with me through thick and thin, and offered support, guidance, encouragement, and pushes me to be the best person I can be. She is one of the hardest working women I know, and never lets circumstances beyond her control dictate her actions. I am so grateful for her.
