We had the good fortune of connecting with Alicia Azahar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alicia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was helping youth, teenagers and young adults find their voice. I found my mother dead when I was 8 years old and it was very traumatic for me. I didn’t know how to process what I was feeling. I was angry, and didn’t know how to express my grief in a constructive way. It wasn’t until I received counseling and was told to write down my feelings through journaling that I started feeling better. I want them to find that same voice and be able to express themselves no matter if they are dealing with low self esteem, bullying, grief, depression or any other issue.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business is not one dimensional, there are multiple layers of it. Being a creative has opened many doors for me and allowed me to not only teach Social and Emotional Intervention classes, but also offer emotional coaching, mentorship, public speaking, perform for different events, write poetry for people to purchase, act in commercials, model and so much more.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When you’re visiting the DFW area, you can’t start your day before eating a delicious breakfast at Yolks in Ft. Worth. The variety of breakfast/brunch items will knock you out of your boots! If you’re looking for something fun to do, stomp on down to the Stock Yards in Ft. Worth. This historic place offers museums, restaurants, shopping places, antique stores, cattle, rodeos and the newly renovated Isis theater where you can watch classic movies! I’m sure you’ll get thirsty after all of that excitement and they offer a selection of drinks at the Isis Theater as well!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank God first and foremost, because without him I am nothing. My husband and children have been my day one supporters, advisors and encouragers through it all. I’m grateful for my family for always coming to support me, offering advice, loving me and being in my corner as well. My friends, prayer group, Bible study group and extended family have supported me through the good and bad. Also, shoutout to Terrhonda Hillman-Armstrong and Michael Guinn for being my mentors, and giving me advice about my book, public speaking and business tips.
