We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Shonte’ and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued a career in the beauty industry because I love women and being able to make them feel beautiful is an unexplainable feeling. Those moments during the process of doing nails when the girls start clicking their fingers together and moving their hands to show off the nails is so priceless and worth all the hard work and time that goes into the process itself.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I decided I wanted to do nails in 2021 because there are not many high quality affordable nail techs in The DFW. I wanted to bring luxury, affordability , and good vibes into one so SetzByLex was created. When you come and get a set from me I want it to be an experience that you don’t get anywhere else. I offer complimentary snacks , drinks and hookah to my clients to pass the time since nails are of course an art you could be with me for a few hours .

I haven’t been in business long since I only started taking clients last year but I will say there are always challenges when you decide to quit your job to be an entrepreneur. I struggled my first 2 months teaching myself time management , trying to find time for clients, nail practice, personal life and being a mom to a 6 year old. I now feel like I have a controlled work life balance but we’re still working on it . Finding clients has not been that hard since I already have social media presence in my area and I also do my own nails so I’m promoting my business literally everyday. Consistency has been key in this process. I post on my main and business pages daily and always utilize all my social platforms for promotion. Even if no one is reposting I post because you never know who’s watching.

Im honestly just trying to create bonds and memories with my clients , nail tech and therapist in one. We talk as they are in my chair and so many women just need a listening non judgmental ear and a good quality fullset and that’s what I’m here for. Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would of course take her to eat at TrueKitchen + Kocktails for dinner Friday night. Saturday afternoon brunch at glorias, They have the best mimosas! Stop and grab lunch at Shells and Tails 2 Geaux . Im a visit a new restaurant every week type of person I love to try and support black owned places . I’d also take her to the club I bottle girl at and the biggest night club in Dallas HeadQuarters for ladies night every Friday ! Then back door with Lotus Dallas on Saturday for Fortune Saturdays it’s always a vibe there .

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and always I thank God for always keeping me blessed and highly favored. Honestly I couldn’t have gotten to where I am today without my biggest supporter my boyfriend Ryan. He literally has been pushing me to follow any and all dreams I’ve had and I’m so thankful for him. My 2 best friends and family who have also always believed in me. My clients of course and anyone who likes, comments or shares my business I couldn’t do it without them all.
