We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Hamel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Certainly! First, identify a problem, it really helps if you truly care about the problem. Then propose a solution to the problem, make it quantifiable, and measurable. The final and most important step is taking action, and generating results.
What should our readers know about your business?
Can Correct is recycling correctly. We’re developing the first multi-stream recycling operation in DFW, with the goal of providing everyone direct access to aluminum-can recycling.
We prioritize the sorting phase first, because contamination is the main reason so much of our waste ends up in a landfill. To date we’ve saved 1357 pounds of aluminum-cans! We compile a sustainability report using our transparent and verifiable results.
I’ve been a professional delivery driver for 5 years, during this time I’ve noticed plenty of litter strewn across the city streets, and seen first-hand the inefficiencies plaguing our current single-stream recycling system. I’ve been obsessed with recycling since a young age, now it’s time to take action and solve problems I care deeply about.
Can Correct is a 501(c)(3) approved nonprofit. Our mission is to recycle as many aluminum-cans as possible in pursuit of sustainability. We do what we can, where we can, when we can, and together we can achieve incredible results.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Time spent outside is the best. Let’s go to downtown Mckinney! It’s such a beautiful ‘lil spot in north Dallas with tons of character, a great spot to eat and drink. Oak Point Nature Preserve and Connemara Meadow Nature Preserve are near and dear to my heart, they’re perfect to take friends, family, and pups for a walk, and catch some fresh air.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Dad for inspiration, Jason Selbach for support / encouragement, and Corey Sheriff for our wild thought experiments. A book series titled, Sara (thank you Pat). And a big thanks to everyone who’s been kind enough to give their cans to me.
