We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Garcia Topete and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, why did you pursue a creative career?
I aspire to inspire others, just like I’ve been inspired all my life, to make our world a better story. Books, movies, and television have immense power to make people imagine better relationships, better versions of themselves, and better futures. Sometimes that inspiration can come from the past, from revisiting and retelling forgotten chapters of history, or they can come from fictional characters and universes that reverberate with our values and our dreams so much that they’re quite real for us individually… But it always comes down to stories and characters and emotions. Facts and figures may lend credibility to a narrative, be that a book or a film, but it’s the storytelling that makes it memorable and human-centered–and the tension and dance between the two is the story of our world.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I founded Nowadays Orange Productions in more than a decade ago in order to tell stories that others may not, whether that be as a movie, as a series, as videogame, as a book, or as something more experimental and in-between. Like anything worth doing, it’s been a long-term challenge to build Nowadays Orange as a business and a brand, but we’ve been doing just that project by project, year over year–and that has translated not only into awards and festival accolades, but more importantly, into a network of highly talented and committed collaborators who share our mission and vision and with whom we’re developing our next slate of projects, including a feature-length documentary about the history of women lawyers in Dallas (“Moving the Needle”), another documentary about paranormal scares and normal struggles of long haul drivers in the United States (“Long Haul Haunting”), a feature-length dramedy about a family who relies on their community to accomplish the American Dream (“Zero to Million”), and several short film projects throughout DFW and Texas, including “My Gift To You” directed by the talented Gabriela “Gaby” Gonzalez.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The day would be spent in the Dallas Arts District, with a quick detour to Bishop Arts for late lunch and catch a movie at the Texas Theater in Oak Cliff; finally capping the day with a cocktail at The People’s Last Stand at Mocking Station. Another day would entail a visit to the Dallas Arboretum, with a visit to Lower Greenville for food and drinks.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to recognize my family and friends, without whose love and support I wouldn’t be where or who I am today.
