We had the good fortune of connecting with Alejandra Coney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alejandra, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When first starting Calidad Designs, I was a full-time corporate accountant. I have always had a passion for all things decor, but I was scared to take that leap. I realized that I could not put 100% effort into both careers, and I had to make a choice. With the support of my community, I resigned from accounting and embarked on this new chapter. Within this past year, I can wholeheartedly say that I have been living my dream. I have been able to combine both of my passions, decor and helping others’ dreams come true. My vision for the business is to provide a luxury service at affordable rates. My clients never have to settle due to budget restrictions. I take pride in being able to give my clients exactly what they want. I will never say that it is easy, but it is definitely rewarding.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Calidad Designs was created to serve as a safe space that allows me to support each of my clients in their creative journey. I like to start each new client’s project with an initial consultation that allows for both of us to sit down and discuss their vision. Once we have established the goals for the project, I create a variety of mood boards with similar aesthetics. The client then explores their options, and changes are made according to the client’s likes and dislikes. Once the final board has been approved by the client, I begin the ordering process. I take care of everything from taking measurements of the space to supervising all deliveries. On install days. I stage the room with all the purchased pieces. Different projects have different requirements, this includes assembling furniture, hanging wall art, installing window treatments and more. Any needed painters or wallpaper installation with be scheduled and supervised by myself as well. Once the project has been completed to the client’s liking, I schedule a photoshoot at the client’s convince. I like to conclude all projects with a follow-up to ensure that they are completely satisfied with their new home.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely start off with brunch at Paradiso. Their food is amazing! We have to stop by Whiskey Cake for dinner and definitely dessert, they have the most amazing whiskey cake! Drinks at Legacy West and explore all the things Bishop Arts, Deep Ellum, and Downtown have to offer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I take pride in my community/support system. They always encourage and support my dreams. I would be lying if I said that I created this company by myself. I would like to first recognize God, and all that He has done for me. He gets all the glory and credit for everything in my life. Through countless breakdowns of utter frustration or stress, I knew that He would get me through it. My husband also deserves a million shoutouts. He has been extremely supportive and encouraging throughout this whole process. He believes in me, even when I do not fully believe in myself. He continues to surprise me with his undivided support.
