We had the good fortune of connecting with Afua Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Afua, what was your thought process behind starting your own business? After years of working in the Credit/Financial Literacy industry, I saw an undeniable need to elevate and educate our community, while giving them the necessary tools to build generational wealth through good credit. With my DIY Credit Repair Kit (https://bit.ly/3rlrGBA), This allows me to empower a broader group, teaching financial literacy and helping those in need of repairing their credit.

My understanding of credit laws, how they function and the ways in which they are interpreted by Credit Bureaus, Creditors & Collection Agencies is the key to my success. I bring real world applications to my clients who are searching for practical answers to their credit dilemmas. My ability to demonstrate a strong vision has paved the way for me to develop as a blossoming business woman.

I was also a mentor in the Resident Owned Incubator (ROBI) Entrepreneurship Program, sponsored by Mayor Bowser of The District of Columbia & Canilive.org. My 501(c)3 Nonprofit, Afua Encourages, Inc also volunteered with First Home Alliance, a HUD Approved Housing Agency that promotes Financial Literacy and Economic Self-Sufficiency. Stay tuned because as an encouraging lady I’m just getting started.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started my career in 1994 with Equifax as a Credit Reporter. Over the years I began to see trends around the fear of credit and financial literacy. I started working with Industry professionals such as Realtors to help their clients understand about credit and how to restore their credit. I would witness how this was literally changing lives and zip codes. I realized how gratifying it became to help in this capacity. I would work my 9-5 during the day and fix credit at night and on weekends, until I finally took the leap to start my own business. This led me to start a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Afua Encourages and work with other agencies to teach about Credit and Financial Literacy. I was offered a spot on the SOS Show out of Detroit called Finance Fridays with Afua Jones where I taught about Credit and Financial Literacy weekly and then even created my own Credit Repair Kit to reach and empower even more people. It’s always a proud moment when clients begin to understand the impact that credit has on their lives. I like to say “cash is king but credit holds conversation.” I would overcome challenges in our industry (which often pairs with interest rates) by teaching, and marketing Credit via different avenues. I want the world to know that we will be chasing our credit scores the rest of our lives and there are practical strategies to ensure that we always position ourselves in a credit worthy capacity. Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would have brunch at Mimi’s in Arlington, and spend one day at Epic Waters. I would have to take them to Fort Worth to Stockyards and enjoy a steak while there. One must visit would also be a rodeo show. I’d have to cap one night off at the Arlington Improv for some comedy. A must experience is Vidorra at Epic Place and of course catch the light show at night while there. For a hot lazy day Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie is a relaxing adventure.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
