We had the good fortune of connecting with Adina Porter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adina, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
We as consumers have to be more aware about the things we put on our body and in our body. Our skin is the largest organ on our body and is very porous.  We must be mindful that some things we put on our skin is absorbed in our body.  If you are using products that have cancer causing agents; over time it can cause a negative effect to your health. I didn’t know this until it was shared with me and I did my own research as well. Therefore, it is very important to use all-natural skin care products on your skin like Sunshine Body Care because it is better for your skin health and doesn’t consist of harmful chemicals.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Sunshine Body Care hand makes all-natural body products. We offer body butters (you use it the same way you use lotion), body scrubs, bath salts, bath & shower bombs. Our goal is to improve the health of your skin and to add some self-care in your life by using our products. What sets me apart is the fact that I offer a variety of scents to enhance your self-care experience.  The products I sell aren’t just for the purpose of making money but also to improve and maintain skin health.  Sunshine Body Care is owned by me, a veteran and a black woman. What I am most excited about and what I love to hear are the reviews I get from customers sharing how my products have healed or softened their skin. It makes me proud to know I am making a small difference in the lives of others.  I am where I am today because of the people God placed in my life to help me along the way.   It has not been an easy journey and I have made a lot of mistakes along the way, but they allowed me to grow and have pushed me to do better.  I’ve learned to be open to failure.  Failure is what leads you to success.  Success is not always about more money, but about growing from your failures and who you’re helping along the way.  I also learned there will be days you want to quit and give up. Through my faith in God and my husband encouraging me to listen and read personal development is what helps me through the tough times. What I want the world to know is to be more mindful about your skin health. Read the labels before you purchase a product. If it has ingredients that you can’t pronounce, you might want to reconsider using it on your skin. I want people to know that your skin health is just important as your physical & mental health; you can’t have one without the other. Sunshine Body Care wants to help everyone have better skin health.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I can honestly say, I have not explored as many places as I should have since moving to Texas in November of 2013. I am slowing working on venturing out to surrounding areas and venues. Some of the places I would take them are The Oasis near Joe Pool Lake. You can enjoy the restaurant; live entertainment and you can also rent a boat. We would also checkout the Arlington Improv lineup and get our laugh on.  Afterwards we would play the old school arcade games at the Arlington Improv.  Another nice location to experience is Studio Grill in Arlington to enjoy a movie and a meal at your seat. I would also take them to the place I have been wanting to go to but have not; that is the Reunion Tower. I hear the view of downtown Dallas is great and so is the dining experience as well. We would also checkout the Dallas World Aquarium and the Dallas Museum of Art.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I first would like to thank and give a shout out to my husband, Roger Porter. He was one of the individuals that encouraged me and cheered me on to start my own business. Without his love and support, none of this would have developed. I also want to thank Jocelyn Howard and Jessica Criddle who I shared a sample of my product within the beginning stages. My body butter not only helped improve their skin, but it also moisturized and soften it too. They were one of my biggest cheerleaders, which pushed me to continue to make more products. I want to thank my mom, Sharon Ray, my brother, Tyman Ray and my best friend Sylvia Marshall for their love, encouragement and support because it really meant a great deal to me to have them in my corner. I would like to thank my daughter, Brianna Ramsey for showing me other tools to utilize, which helped me in the rebranding process i.e. new logo, tagline, etc. I want to thank my other best friend, Jackie Faison for not only supporting me and buying my products, but always taking items to work to sell and referring new customers. I truly appreciate my niece, Andrea Nowell for suggesting that I offer men scented products as well. I truly appreciate Ralph Fields for designing my website, making my product labels and enhancing my logo. Of course, I want to thank every person that has supported my business. I am so grateful for every purchase. I never take it for granted and I am so appreciative to everyone that has spent their hard-earned money and continues to purchase from Sunshine Body Care.
