We had the good fortune of connecting with Abby Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Abby, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“Exercise is a privilege, not a chore.”

In 2019 I had a surgery that went wrong leaving me partially paralyzed. Doctors told me it was permanent and that my right leg would be in a brace for the rest of my life. Long story short, after nearly a year of different types of therapy and natural nerve regrowth encouragement, I took off the brace. I promised myself I would never take the ability to walk for granted again.

Now on days when I maybe don’t feel up to a big workout, I remind myself how lucky I am. Exercise truly is such a privilege that not everyone gets to enjoy. Whether if it is just going for a walk or running in a race, I honor and thank my body for what it can do.

Now as I open my own barre studio, I am excited to share the beauty of movement! Barre is such a cool workout because it is accessible to everyone, and can be as modified or challenging as you need it to be.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
NEIGHBORHOOD barre is not your average barre class. Our workouts target all major muscle groups and are for all levels, so you can take the intensity up or down to get what you need on that day. But it is also so much more than a workout! It is built on community and encouragement. nb is a place for everyone, no matter their experience or fitness level.

When I started going to nb in North Carolina, I didn’t realize how badly I craved a community aspect in my fitness journey. My whole life I had been on my fitness journey just myself, even when in group fitness classes. So when I found this group who held me accountable and noticed when I missed a Monday and would text me to check up on me – it changed the game for me! When I moved to Fort Worth, I quickly realized that this area would benefit for a community building studio like NEIGHBORHOOD barre. So seven months pregnant, I decided to build this community and spread the love I had found. Having a newborn and starting a business has proven to be super challenging but I know that my son will benefit from his mom having this strong and beautiful community. (Plus – we will have free childcare during class!! #parentwin)

Getting to this point has been so far from easy. I had to suffer through difficult, painful and life altering events to find this path. There were times that I thought I would not recover emotionally, physically and spiritually from partial paralysis and alcoholism. But I found recovery in movement, and I am beyond excited to help others find their healing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would obviously start the day with a NEIGHBORHOOD barre class and get our shakes in for the day! Since the physical location doesn’t open until February, I would plan a fun pop up event at Clearfork Trailhead so that after class we could sit outside at press and have some coffee. If it’s a Saturday we are most definitely enjoying the farmers market and getting our flowers from the little blue truck and some granola from the granola girl. For lunch we are heading to Flower Child before going to one of the bars in west 7th to cheer for my Georgia Bulldogs.

Some other must dos are get some juice from Main Squeeze, visit southlake town square for some shopping and go see my husband at Travis Mathew where he works, get some sushi from Hush in Keller, coffee from Roots in NRH, get some BBQ from Heim and then ice cream from MELT, and get some sizzling fajitas at Joe T. Garcia’s. And of course we will have to hit up Billy Bobs for some good ole Texas music and dancing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The women in my yoga teacher training class deserve SO much love for helping me to get where I am now. They nurtured me and supported me at my lowest and helped me get over some big obstacles life threw at me. They celebrated my most joyous times during our eight month training. These women are some of my biggest cheerleaders and l love them endlessly. If you are ever in Charlotte, NC, go take a yoga class at iShine. You will be in for such a treat!
