We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Van Slyke and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mary, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always loved helping people and skincare has always been something that has interested me. I have worked for other companies and franchises before and can see some flaws in the system. So I wanted to come up with a plan to implement my talents, passion, and helping others with their skin health. Thus; MJ Skin Bar was born!

What should our readers know about your business?
As a young child I have always been fascinated in skin care and the beauty industry. I went to college at 17 and really had no clue what I wanted to do.
Like most college kids that have been sheltered most of their lives I went a little wild. Lol
I ended up dropping out after three years in and continued to struggle with career options all through my twenty’s.
When I turned 35 I had a bit of a “mid-life crisis” and remember thinking what am I doing with my life; my children had reached an age that they know longer needed my time as much.
And I needed to figure out my identity and a way to earn a living.
My mother recommended esthetician school and I went for it.
I worked every day that I wasn’t in school and went to school full time; while still raising kids.
It was super hard but I was determined and school felt so natural and I had found what I was good at.
As soon as I graduated I took my state boards during Covid. I immediately got a job in my field and started my journey.
I learned a lot from working for another company; but I had reached my highest potential and I needed to learn, grow, and excel more.
My sweet friend approached me with a business idea and I knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to at least try..

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have only lived in the area for 8 months but so far my favorite place by far is the stockyards! It feels like a mini Nashville. I love the atmosphere, the live music, and the entire vibe.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Chase Van Slyke- my husband and love of my life for encouraging me to take this leap of faith. He has always seen the best in me and continues to encourage me in my goals and dreams. He sees in me what I sometimes can’t see in my self and I am forever grateful for his support in this new endeavor.
