We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacobie Woods and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacobie, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Art has always been a part of my life. Whether it was drawing, music or building something, art was always a source of calmness and even happiness for me. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. I think having that thought has kept me on the path to be creative in all things, especially my career.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to think that my art has a certain loud and in your face look to it and maybe a bit of whimsy. I grew up in San Antonio, Texas and would often see graffiti throughout my neighborhood. A lot of my color choices and composition is inspired by the streets where grew up. As I’ve developed my style I’m proud that I’m able to reach back to my roots for inspiration. Getting to where I am was a bit of a ride. When I moved to Galveston from Oklahoma I didn’t know what direction My art would take. A friend of mine in Oklahoma was actually looking to be a tattoo artist and mentioned that I should look for an apprenticeship myself. After I met Gotti it was on! I was working full time and whatever free time I had I spent at the tattoo shop cleaning, answering phones, working the front desk etc. Whatever the artists needed I would get.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that I’m more capable than I think. What that means to me is that if you go for something you want you have to give it your all. In doing so you unlock new levels of you character that will help see you through the challenge, and in turn you will reach the goals you set and more!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother, Laura Woods, deserves a large credit in my story. Without her continued support and belief in me I wouldn’t be where I am. Id also like to shout out my mentors Joe moak out of Asylum tattoo in Galveston texas and Anthony “Gotti “brigante who is sadly no longer with us. Gotti gave me the opportunity to prove myself as an apprentice and after he moved on to a different shop Joe continued to mentor me and help me grow into the artist I am today.
