We had the good fortune of connecting with Heidy Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heidy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business was never my plan. I actually went to college for an education degree to become an elementary school teacher and worked as a preschool teacher while pursuing a degree. I grew up in a Hispanic household where I was told that the only path to success was getting an education and a reliable job. So starting a business never crossed my mind. It wasn`t until 202o when the covid pandemic happened and everything was shutting down and being a teacher became emotionally and mentally hard. The pandemic made me contemplate my decision to become a teacher. At this time as well I started helping my husband and his business with their marketing. I have always had an interest in the marketing field but never really acted on this particular career because I knew as a marketer I would have to be pushed outside my comfort zone. I`m a very reserved person and typically shy away from extrovert activities. I notice that my college offered online marketing classes so I took a huge leap and switch my career path to social media marketing at BYU Idaho. Making this switch was very scary for me because it was a completely different path than what I originally had planned for my life. Fast forward a few months, and I notice a local business in my area looking for social media marketing on Facebook. I told myself that I shouldn`t go after this opportunity because I hadn`t finished school yet or felt like I knew enough to actually help this business. I told my husband about this Facebook post and he encouraged me to go after this position and not to worry about the rest. I told him a million reasons why I shouldn`t but he responded with, “What’s the worst that can happen? They say, no?” This phrase made me realize that nothing bad could happen and I went and talked to the owner of this business and he loved all my ideas and suggestions that I had for his business. He told me that I have great strategies that could help him grow more on social media. In three months that business was able to grow to over 3ok followers on social media, with millions of monthly views. They were able to get new customers and grow their community for their business. After this experience, I fell in love with the idea of helping small business grow their social media presence. That is when I decided that I would open up my own social media agency, named From Bland To Grand that would help businesses with creating content that is fun and original for their businesses for their overall growth. Since then I was able to get help so many more businesses grow their social media presence and bring in leads for their businesses.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What keeps me busy professionally is that I’m always on the go collecting content for my clients. From Bland To Grand is not your normal social media agency, we are a full-service content-creating agency. Not only does my agency guide you through the changes in social media platforms but we come up with fun and authentic ideas for videos that you can do for your business to attract your ideal customer. We also come to your location and film, edit, and direct all the content that will be posted on your social media platforms. I really believe that in order to gain leads through social media you have to first create a loyal audience that will love you and your product. As a small business, you don`t have a huge budget for marketing but I always tell my clients that it doesn`t matter because you can create an online community that will LOVE you and your product which is more valuable than spending money on ads that people won’t connect with. Consumers now care way more about where their products are coming from and who makes them more than before. That`s why my marketing approach is all about creating a story for your brand and marketing it as authentic and natural as possible.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend was visiting I would take them downtown and explore the local businesses in my area. Anywhere I ago if it’s for vacation, or a work trip I always check out the local business in that area because I love supporting small businesses.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Someone that encouraged me through this journey was definitely my husband Joseph Miller. He kept me sane through all the chaos of running a business and helped me through times that I though I was not good enough as a business owner. I also got a lot of inspiration from Rachel Pedersen through her youtube channels, and TikTok videos and I had the opportunity to intern for her for a TikTok internship where I learned a lot of strategies to help businesses grow on social media.
