We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandra De León and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexandra, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Pursuing an artist career is not an easy thing to do but it is something I fall even more in love with every day. I have always had this creative bug in me since the moment my mom gifted me a camcorder. I used this gift as a camera and from then on I knew I wanted to be able to capture stories through a lens. The ability to pick up my camera and create something that not only means something to me but has the ability to connect to others drives me to pursue an artistic career.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a conceptual artist I love the theatrics I can put into my work. I enjoy the planning process of my art and creating a scene filled with props and models. Being able to visually see my ideas come together is something that makes me proud to be an artist. This creative path has not always been easy, being an artist can be very emotionally draining. Life, mental health, an artist block are a few things I’ve dealt with that create challenges for me. As I have gotten older I have learned to use these things as a way to create art. I have learned that there isn’t a solution to everything but as long as I am determined many things are possible. I hope that my beliefs about getting through road blocks and using it to fuel creative thinking is translated through my work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being a photographer I love exploring new locations for good photo ops and good food of course. If my bestie were visiting I would start by taking them to Cris and John in Dallas. This is the perfect food place if your in the mood for Vietnamese and Mexican! For some savory snacks and aguas frescas I would drive us to El Rey in Denton. Lastly, for instagram worthy photos I would take us to the Denton Square at night.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to recognize my photography teachers who pushed me to lengths I didn’t know I was capable of. I would also like to thank my parents for always supporting any crazy ideas I may have. 🙂
