We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalie McFarland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Natalie, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Be the guy for the thing. Simple, pick something. While we are specific to agriculture when it comes to digital strategy and marketing services, we COULD do what we do for any industry, but why DON’T we? It is a little counter intuitive to most people as they start a business because they are afriad there isnt enough work in a small demographic. The starving artist always goes for whatever falls in their lap as far as the types of work they are willing to do. We COULD do a campaign for running shoes, but to be honest, if I am running, there’s a bear behind me and you should run too. Sticking to what you know, what you love and what you believe in actually makes you more effective. It also makes you more relatable to any hiven population. When someone says “hey I need THE GUY for agriculture marketing”, I want people to shout “McFarland Productions” they’re the expert. Narrowing your niche gives you someone in particular to talk to in your own marketing efforts and making it MUCH easier to find new customers, develop real relationships with them AND help them relate to their customer because you are “one of them”. Know who you are, and, if you have a team, hire more people with your same passions.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Being in business isn’t easy. Anyone who tells you it is easy is just lying. Being your own boss is not all sunshine and roses. It takes relentless, unequivocal dedication to the job and willingness to do what it takes no matter the sacrifice.
There are challenges with starting a business and getting enough work just as there are problems when you have too much work. Success is hard; failure is easy. Every problem in business comes down to being too stubborn to fail and accepting nothing but success even if the road getting there is muddy.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Everyone I have ever known has taught me something. Some good, some bad, some seemingly not notable, but I have learned something from everyone. There are many people who influenced McFarland Productions in good ways. My dad was a business owner and taught me the value of hard work, hustle, dedication and business ethics. My first boss after college, Mark Sheldon taught me that additude, fear and blind ambition are the key personality factors that make a person successful. He also helped me design a sustainable and repeatable business model that could be successful. Best boss I ever had. My team that has joined me over the years and their dedication to our clients has been HUGE. And last but not least my husband, who is now a full time part of the business, for all his support through the celebrations and frustrations of being a business owner.
