Meet Wellington Marinho | Architect, Interior Designer, Lighting Designer and Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with Wellington Marinho and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Wellington, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks is about having confidence in yourself. To step beyond your comfort zone require a good strategy and maturity enough to know that everything has 50% been right. But if you don’t try you will never know. I would regret looking at my past and knowing that I didn’t take risks because I was scared to try. My confidence teaches me that I can not always win, but I can learn with every single try.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am an architect by nature and a journalist by graduation. This means it took years of studying journalism to realize that I was avoiding my real passion. I’m passionate about graphics, technology, 3D visualization, and how nowadays resources can help professionals of the future see what is about to come.

A lot of companies still live in the past, drafting architectural documents in an old fashion way and I was always trying to see a better way of being productive, gaining time, not wasting it,

It took me all these years working for someone else, to realize that if I want to see changes, I have to start with myself. It’s never easy, No one wants to risk a company’s salary to try something “new”, at least someone that is not passionate enough.

Always been disappointed by “companies culture” of at the end you’re really just a number, working hard to make money for someone else that loses their passion for architecture a long time ago. I never wanted to become one of these people. And here I am coming from a small town in Brazil taking over my own life and career.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As an internet Google guide myself with over I have a couple of places that I would always go: I would start a brunch at “Breadwinners”, but I would go a little earlier the place is always full of beautiful and interesting people.

Everybody that knows me would know that I would prefer to have friends that have dogs. In this case, would take these friends for a talk and a beer at the “Manhattan’s Project” a small brewery where you can seat outside playing with your dog while you have beer,

To end the night I would take them to “Eataly” a charming place with a touch of Italian vibe. I love that place. I can buy a good bottle of Italian wine and try it with good pasta. I could just have dinner upstairs and have a conversation or just be downstairs and look at the chefs prepare a fresh pizza.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve learned a lot from my mother. She’s the strongest woman in our entire family. She was and still is the first to encourage me to continue, to believe in myself. She taught me that when someone says that you can’t be there, or you can’t do certain things, that person is talking about their limitations, their shallow way of pursuing goals, and seeing yourself wherever you want to be.

And I recognize myself as my greatest mentor. No one more than myself knows what I’ve faced being where I am right now. Dedicated nights of study, readings after readings, researching, taught-learning, failing and conquering and no one more than me, no matter how close someone can be, a friend, a family member, no one can put you anywhere, but yourself.
