We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Stablier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to start an environmental service company for quite some because good service in my industry had fallen off tremendously, and I thought that I could change the industry by raising the bar in terms of providing better service. However, I was faced with a difficult situation with my current employer. I couldn’t resign because I agreed to a non-solicitation / Non compete agreement. My employer had no reason to terminate my employment when I had exceeded my revenue goals every month, which was extraordinary in 2020 when our economy was crippled by COVID-19. As a Christian, I decided to pray about my situation, asking God to make it clear to me what He wants me to do while being faced with this non-solicitation / non-compete agreement and an economy that was struggling. The following day, my boss sent a text message to me and a colleague, asking us to meet him at the Dallas office to go over some things. On Thursday, September 17, 2020, I was laid off. Knowing that this was a clear answer to my prayer, and knowing how extraordinary it was for me to exceed my revenue goals every month in 2020, I had to ask why me, and I was told that this isn’t based on production. I almost ran out of the door with excitement, knowing that God answered my prayer and that’s why we’re CLEAR Environmental, because God made it clear.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets our business apart is our customer service for example, you will not get an automated operator, but I live person every time you call and my goal as we grow is for that to always be the case, within two rings, the caller will be speaking with a live person. Secondly, we are always available and the answer is always yes, from 4:00 in the afternoon on a Friday to 2:00 am on a Saturday. Many decision makers in our industry are extremely busy and are looking for ways to help them work smarter, not harder. A couple ways that we can help with that is, we provide our customers with preprinted accumulation labels for their waste. Most waste generators have to order blank accumulation labels and write the regulatory information on them. Secondly, we can come out to your facility, take an inventory of your waste, email the customer the inventory, and schedule the waste shipment for them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend come to town for a week, I would take them to Nick & Sam’s for a delicious steak since Dallas is known for it’s steaks and that wouldn’t be the only steakhouse. The last night I would take him to Bob’s Chophouse, or Hutchins BBQ in McKinney. Depending on the season, since we’re sports fans, I’d take them to either a Cowboys, Mavs, Starts, or Rangers game. Uptown in Dallas is a must. Fort Worth Stock Yards, Billy Bob’s, and Joe T Garcia’s in Forth Worth is always a good excuse to put on the cowboy boots, not to mention the great time.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give my shoutout to my grandmother and my bride who are the strongest ladies I know.
I was raised in a negative environment where I was never enough, not capable or qualified, so expectations for me to be much was low. However, I had a grandmother, that I affectionately called, “Nan”. Nan told me that I am enough, I am capable and I am qualified. She made me read aloud Philippians 4:13, which says, “I can do ALL things through Christ who gives me strength.” She would ask me, “does that say some things, most things, or a lot of things”, to which I would reply, no ma’am. She would then tell me, not to let anyone tell me that I can’t, or that I’m not capable.
My Bride Holly and I have been married for 32 years. Holly has always picked me up when I’m down and been the rock to lean on when I’m struggling. If it was up to Holly, I would have started CLEAR Environmental a long time ago. Holly always felt strongly that we would be successful at this business and has been ready to take the leap of faith for quite some time, but I never thought the timing was right until it was.
Chris Ewing who is now President of E4 Holdings took a chance on not just hiring me with no sales or industry experience but paid to have my family moved from Wyoming and back to Texas. The lessons that I learned from Chris and the team at Effective Environmental (E2) were priceless. It was Chris’ leadership at Effective Environmental and expectations to provide exceptional service that changed the environmental service industry. Effective Environmental sold to one of the bigger Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facilities in 2015 (TSDF). As a result of E2 selling, good service to the customer has become the new normal in our region. So, with the lessons that I learned from Chris and the team at E2, I’m leading by the example that Chris set to provide waste generators the service that they all deserve. We use one of E4’s subsidiaries, Wastelinq for our waste management solutions. If you’re going to use a company for waste management solutions, use the people that have experience in the industry.
It wasn’t long after getting hired at E2 that E2 acquired a small environmental service company in the Houston market, which is how I met Matt Gilbert who is now a partner of Gilbert & Pardue Business Advisors. Matt recognized that I had no experience and saw that I could use some guidance, so Matt took the time out of his busy schedule to give me direction and guidance on how to not just win business, but how to build lasting relationships. Matt not only spent time with me in the field, but took me to some of his customers and had me visit with those customers to discuss their relationship. It’s been 16 years since that time that Matt and I spent together, and today that relationship is still strong.
Wade Mensing was my Sales Manager at E2 and is now Director of Operations at Sunbelt Industrial Services. It is without hesitation that I say that Wade was the best example of a leader that I’ve had the privilege to work for. We’ve all seen the images of a boss vs. leader. I can honestly say that Wade defines the true meaning of a leader that sets the example by his actions. I’ve included an image of the boss vs. leader image and anyone that has worked for Wade or works for him today will testify or give you a story of their hands on experience with Wade. It’s Wade’s example of leadership and can-do attitude that has influenced me I’m bringing with me to CLEAR Environmental. We use Sunbelt as a sub-contractor when the services that they offer are a good fit.
