We had the good fortune of connecting with LaShirl Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LaShirl, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Once I figured out what industry I wanted to work in, the process was easy. I never wanted to work a 9-5, so I had to make sure whatever industry I chose, it would be something I liked but would come to love. I knew starting a new business would be a 24/7 adventure, but I was up for the challenge.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
L Group PR is a full service boutique public relations firm specializing in entertainment and sports PR. We also create brand campaigns for our clients as well as event publicity for corporations and produce special events.

The road is never smooth if you’re striving to be a successful entrepreneur, but fortunately, I’ve been able to tackle every challenge that has been put forth before me. I think the one thing that sets my company apart from others is, we’re truly a ‘family’. I don’t treat clients as clients, I treat them as part of my family. And my clients love that and have adopted the same mentality. If the firm signs a new client, our current clients will make a post or comment welcoming them to the ‘family’. That speaks volumes to me, because it is something they took the initiative of doing on their own.

I would say the biggest challenge has been being a ‘female’ in a male-dominated business where most of the time, females are not taken seriously. Fortunately, now, there are many females who have entered the sports business, whether it be a publicist (such as myself), an executive in the front office to broadcasting (analyst, sideline reporters).

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If it’s their first time visiting Dallas, I’ll ask if they want to do the ‘tourist’ spots like Southfork, ATT Stadium, etc. If they’re a ‘regular’ visitor, we’re hitting all the eating spots and lounges….anything Deep Ellum, Uptown or Frisco would be cool.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is no particular person for me to ‘shoutout’. I believe EVERYONE who has supported me and been on this journey with me, deserves a shoutout. All have been truly supportive and in my corner since the beginning and I am truly grateful and thankful for their support.
