We had the good fortune of connecting with David Ryan Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David Ryan, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Having a team Helping other succeed
Setting a higher expectation than what people would expect as stylist in terms of a successful career

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Starting out I focused on two things: 1. Being the best all around 5 star salon experience from start to finish
2. Educating stylists and helping them build 6 figure careers in an industry where a lot of people struggle

I believe the residents of Denton county voting us “Best Color Salon” in Denton county for 8 years (from the first year we opened) is a testament to having achieved the first goal. And we are committed to keep earning that and improving the experience every year.

The second goal we have also achieved with flying colors. We put a lot of time, effort, and resources into marketing our stylists and bringing in clients, taking stylists from empty books to months of pre-booking and 6 figure incomes. While we will always have areas to improve, numbers don’t lie, and the numbers say that we create wildly successful careers for stylists.

I had some great mentors who each taught me different things. A big motivating factor for excellence across the board with the salons is the fact that my name is on the building. That’s my reputation on every service, transaction, client interaction, etc. and my goal has always been to cultivate a culture where each and every stylist, management, and front desk team member feel so much a part of the salon that they take the reputation personally as well. They are proud to be part of an award winning team and have definitely taken it upon themselves even to protect that name.

I want to change the way people see the beauty industry. I want to play a big part in replacing all of the negative stigmas around cosmetologists being drop out or pay check to pay check or getting burnt out or struggling and replace that with expectations of professionalism, education, and success and fulfillment.

I’ve learned that I need a team around me that is as bought into that vision as I am. It’s been a journey and a big learning experience, but I love the team we have created and feel confident it will become increasingly dynamic going forward.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ft worth rodeo Hard eight bbq
Ritzy B bbq
Spicy Mexico Bowie

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My only purpose or drive to do anything to work for would be my wife and kids. Everything is for them and because of them.

Before them, the only thing that drove me was watching hairstylists succeed. Watching them come from nothing and building a successful career is very satisfying to me.
