We had the good fortune of connecting with Lydia Shumard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lydia, why did you pursue a creative career?
Art in various forms has always been something I’m drawn to and love doing. When I was younger, I would go in the closet under our staircase and hide out for hours drawing and crafting. A few years after I had been using my mom’s old DSLR camera, someone from my church asked if I would take their family photos. This was an eye opening experience for me as I realized I could create physical items- photos- that hold memories and that will be looked at and passed down for generations. I think it’s amazing being able to create something, that when you look back on, you can remember what was going on at that time in life and the feelings you had. I have been able to photograph everything from families, seniors, newborns, wedding receptions and even a funeral. All of those occasions were life changing moments as they were the beginnings of a new chapter. After shooting family photos for friends for a few years, I decided photography was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. In 2019 I officially began Lydia Shumard Photography and I have absolutely loved it!

What should our readers know about your business?
Through my photography, I strive to focus on capturing the real life candid moments and not always “picture perfect” ones. I want to show who you, or who you and your family, are through my work as it showcases the moment of life you are in. Whether it’s showing families interacting with one another or showing a seniors personality, I love showing the time of life you’re experiencing. Client’s reactions to their photos always make me so happy. I love giving my clients photos that hold memories for them to look back on.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well first, without a doubt, we would go to EverBowl. I absolutely LOVE their acia bowls- amazing to say the least! Then I would take them to either the Arboretum or the Texas Discovery Gardens because butterflies and nature are so magical.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents have played a big role in my photography career! I fell in love with photography when I was around 9 years old using my mom’s DSLR camera. They bought me my first camera and have supported me every step of the way. I am grateful I can go to them for advice and to bounce ideas off of. They are the reason me and my business have grown so much as they continue to push and support me!
