We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyler Redding and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyler, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born in Gainesville, Florida, but raised in Arlington, Texas. My father is a minister at a baptist church, and my mother is a teacher. The fact that my father’s ministry degrees were in marriage and family counseling helped me a great deal as I grew up. He was able to counsel me through life’s situations without me realizing he was doing it. And through all of that there was a theme. My dad always wanted me to have fun. Life can be very difficult, so sometimes we all need something fun and light to do or watch or participate in that makes life a little easier, and my dad exemplified that for me. That is part of the reason at the end of my Instagram posts and YouTube videos, I always say, “Have fun today.” I make content that is fun for me to make, and I want my viewers to have fun watching it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I watched a TON of YouTube in the beginning. I absorbed and learned everything I could, then I practiced. I dealt with imposter syndrome some along the way. I felt like I didn’t belong in the YouTube/ photography community. I didn’t think I was good enough and felt like a fake. There were a lot of days that I felt insecure about my photos, felt like they were never good enough, and that I would never be good enough. But, thankfully, that feeling went away as I practiced photography and videography. I got better at both. One day, as I watched one of my favorite YouTubers, he showed a photo he took and my first thought was, “I could take that photo.” And then I paused and reflected. “I could take that photo.” I realized I had gotten to a level with my photography that I felt confident saying I could match my favorite YouTuber shot for shot in photography. Or, at least, I could match that specific photo. It gave me a lot of confidence in my ability as a photographer. I realized Imposter Syndrome goes away. All I had to do was keep practicing, and with the help of others, push past the insecurity.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to a Grill and Bar called The Tipsy Oak. It’s one of my favorite hangouts. After that, we would go to Freeplay. At Freeplay, there is an $11 dollar entry fee, and after that all the games are free. I would also show them my favorite coffee shop, Davis Street Espresso in Dallas, and then take them around the Bishop Arts shopping district in Dallas as well.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give my shoutout to two people. First, my late friend, Taylor. He was an amazing videographer and a friend. He taught me so much about video production, there is no way I’d be YouTubing at the level I am without him.
And second, my wife Liz. She has been so supportive with my decision to create videos. If she did not support me, I couldn’t be doing this.
