We had the good fortune of connecting with Omie D and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Omie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In 2007 the only Jazz station in the Dallas/Fort Worth area ended its radio broadcasting time. Loving Jazz music, I began a quest to bring Jazz music back to Dallas. I researched and came to the conclusion of “Pirate Radio”. Basically I created my own streaming server and loaded up my jazz collection, embedded the link to hit my streaming server, and created my website. BigDWaves.com was born and the 1st time I clicked the link and heard my music my mind was hooked. At this time I had No knowledge of IT, but I had a mission. I wanted to now create the entire station experience for my 2 listeners. I spent many days at Guitar Center asking questions that no one could answer…
“No sir, I am not recording. This is going to be Live over the web…”
Insert Blank Stare
Eventually I figured it out and I was able to announce my songs before they played to the world. I was finally a Radio Station DJ, I mean, I was an Internet Radio DJ! This lead to a long life of Podcasts and YouTube when no one believed streaming media was the future until this day. I have worked on many shows and with many Podcast artists to get their message out to the world. I spent many years as a starving artist or pandering to sponsors to get paid. Using that little money to keep the doors open of Internet Radio stations, or buying equipment for more live remotes. Today, we have created The Podcast Farm to help Podcast creators monetize their art. I believed in the future of Streaming media and it helped me with my original mission. Podcast creators are Artist and Hosts, we are a valuable part of the fabric of entertainment too!
(Shout outs to Joey & Mandi for being down since Day 1).
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets us apart as The Podcast Farm is that everyone is passionate about talking and something else. I love helping someone turn their passion into a Podcast that they can share with the world. I would do this for Free and I have done it for Free for many years. I actually was a Dj to keep the doors open of my original Internet Radio Station. I kept believing in my original mission and always looked to innovate 1st. Podcasting was one of the first industries to bring you On-Demand streaming. I have watched Streaming media go from Laughable to Household name. The only way I made it this far was to just keep doing shows, even if no one is listening or watching. People laughed when I told them that soon the Radio would not be the best place to hear music or their favorite show host. After a small break, I rekindled my love as a Producer of Podcasts. It is so much more work, but I love seeing someone feel the passion that sparked my initial interests in Podcasting.
I am most excited to see where this new innovation in Podcasting will take us as a group. The Future of Our Industry. I am looking to help mold this industry into one that rivals the music industry, but with better representation for the artists. It will take some help and unity from across the Globe. I look forward to meeting and working with every single person to create a better industry for Podcast creators.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
