We had the good fortune of connecting with Vee Faye and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vee, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Having always naturally have been the person behind process intervention, regardless of the industry that I was in at the time, definitely played a key role in me starting Vee Faye and eventually Paint Jam Dallas.
My mind always thinks of ways to be more innovative and raise the quality of services provided in business.
I always think about the blind spots of a business, giving any company that I’d worked for a leg up on the competition.
Quite frankly, I began to see how much my passion for innovation and quality translated financially for businesses that didn’t value me in the ways that I felt they should’ve.
I always told myself and those around me,” the slowest way to get a dollar is to go to work.”
Not in a,” don’t work for what you want,” kinda way… but more in a,” get creative when it comes to earning your living.”
You can ask for a dollar and get it relatively fast. You can hold a sign on a corner with a clever saying and get it relatively fast.(Absolutely no digs at our houseless community.)You can fill out an application, wait for a week or two, go to an interview, wait another week, go to the second interview, and maybe get a paycheck three weeks later.
Then, you can bet on yourself, look crazy while you’re barely making it, have a few bits of doubt, build your spiritual stamina and genuine confidence, and continue to bet on you only to come out as a major winner at the end, not even just in a financial way.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Paint Jam Dallas is a daydream that came to fruition for an artist who was, and still is if we’re being honest, afraid to be vulnerable creatively. Erykah Badu, The Queen, said it best,” I’m an artist… and I’m sensitive about my sh.t.” That’s how most of us tend to be as adults creatively.
A lot, if not most, of our guests enter the room vocalizing that their creative abilities extend no further than stick figure drawings that you could play an intense game of charades with. Our goal is to encourage and empower these same individuals enough to confidently and creatively explore while just having fun creating a masterpiece. We have had the pleasure of seeing this happen hundreds and thousands of times over. We encourage the child within all of us to roam freely.
How did we get to where we are now? A ton of accountability, openness, and continuous process improvement landed us here.
Business can get tough and stay tough sometimes. Especially, for a big time dreamer and creator. The biggest thing that I had to do was learn to decide what was creatively negotiable and non negotiable. As your daydream begins to manifest in front of you, it’s hard to accept that some parts won’t be a hit to everyone else like it was when it came to you but that’s business. You have to continue to express yourself regardless.
The process has not been easy and I don’t think that it’s supposed to be easy. Anything that is long term and is to be what I hope for Paint Jam Dallas to be would never just come easily or it would be everywhere.
Overcoming challenges means building the mental muscle and acknowledging that challenges are meant to be overcome. They’re literally setup for you to conquer them. Mental muscle comes through therapy, accountability partners, learning through other’s experiences and their advice. Jay Shetty and Brad Lea are two of my favorite “get your mind back in the game” podcast hosts and I highly recommend that anyone reading this check them out.
The one thing I would like the world to know about Paint Jam Dallas is that with every single decision, you are hurting or helping. Creating will always help. Lean into that love and good energy.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting the area and I wanted to show them the best time ever, it goes without saying that we’d vibe out at Paint Jam Dallas! Lol. We’d likely rent a slingshot and ride around exploring and eating in the Bishop Arts District as well as Deep Ellum. Andretti’s in The Colony would be a must as well because that place is amazing! There’s so much to do in North Texas that I’ll leave my list there.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are soooo many people that deserve a shoutout in this entrepreneurial romance that I have had the pleasure of experiencing.
To start, my girlfriend, Liz. She is the business to my creativity and the required logistics to my whimsical fairytale. She is the very essential financial analyst required to escape the starving artist lifestyle that I tango with from time to time.
Beyond her, my entrepreneurial circle has been a MAJOR influencer in my story. I had no clue that when I joined a Facebook Group named “It’s Your Moment,” facilitated by LaQuisha Moore aka Qui Monroe that things would change as much and as fast as they did. She didn’t know it, but that was the very first time that I sat at a table as something other than a resource for intellectual withdrawals.
Felisha Burleson of The Patchwork Society, has been a key player in my story. Not only has she been a motivational pit stop the ENTIRE time that I’ve been on this journey, she has been a resource for growth opportunities for me both personally and professionally.
My mother, Carolyn Wyatt. Not only is she the reason that I am, from a foundational standpoint, why I am who I am, but she inspires me to just keep pushing for more out of myself. She drives me to never settle and I love her for that.
Last, but definitely not least, is the extremely supportive friend group that I have been blessed with. I am an Aries in the truest, purest form. I love impulsive, optimistic, spiritually inclined moves. While I do believe in divine timing and alignment, I also believe that balance and grounding is required to assess circumstances/situations in the most objective way possible. Great friends help in that way. Kivon, Swayze, Valencia, Leesa Kassie, Nick, Nat, and Chief Swan are my go to guys! They know exactly what I need to hear when I need to hear it.
