We had the good fortune of connecting with Shawonna Metcalf and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shawonna, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always been the person who loves to encourage and motivate other people. Even if I am not in the best place or where I want to be in life, I just love to see the people that are in my circle and others win. So, when I decided to start “Own It Boo” podcast, all I could think of was how I can use my platform to encourage and motivate others from all over. I’m very transparent and don’t hold any of my flaw’s hostage, instead I use them to show others you are not alone. I want us to Own It no matter what it is without shame or guilt.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an Account Manager for a mortgage company, Founder of H.U.G.S non-profit organization, and Founder/ Host of “Own It Boo” podcast. My life revolves around giving back and encouraging others. When I was growing up, I would always see my mom giving back, helping the elderly, or letting someone stay with us till they get on their feet. I guess that’s why I have the heart for it. Rather I’m at work helping someone get into their new home, planning an event to give back to our community, or speaking a word so that my listeners can feel encouraged throughout the week. All of this is who I am, and It wasn’t easy getting to this point. I used to be a people pleaser, insecure, broken, and carrying my childhood trauma around like a suitcase. I knew it was something in me that needed to get out, but I had no clue where to start. My vision was so cloudy, so I decided to make some changes. First, I had to forgive myself. Second, I had to forgive those who hurt me. Third, which is the most important. I had to put God at the center. I spent time alone and started reading my words more. After a while I started to see the woman God had created me to be. My vision was clear, and I was owning it all. I learned that being patient is so important, because great things don’t happen overnight. What I have now I prayed for over 7 years ago. When people tune in to listen to my podcast, I want them to know that I’m giving them everything I have. I want people to see that you don’t have to have it all together for God to use you. Take your life lessons and use them to push forward. Don’t allow your story to end being broken and not satisfied with life. We have the power to change that, but you must identify the things that are holding you back. I am Unapologetic for being me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I really enjoyed the food and vibe at XOXO, TRUE Kitchen and Dahlia Bar & Bistro. Trust me you won’t be disappointed. If you want to have a little fun, I will consider Top golf, Sweet Tooth Hotel, or Punch Bowl Social. There are so many things to do in Dallas, so please take advantage and enjoy.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a hug shoutout to Ella Smart, founder of “Wise Woman Ministries”. She has prayed over me and spoke life into me on numerous occasions. She saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. I remember her telling me I was called to do great things and will be the voice for many.
I also want to shout out Jessica Stephenson, founder of “LipsbyJ”. She has always been so supportive and encouraging when it comes to me taking big steps in my life. I appreciate her honesty and love she has shown me throughout the years we’ve known each other.
