We had the good fortune of connecting with James Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi James, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always been inspired by the stories that scents can tell. I feel that scents can take people to a specific place and time, transport a person to an exotic location, or enhance any mood a person might be feeling, or want to feel. Whether it’s a mother’s perfume, grandfather’s tobacco pipe, an old barn, a beautiful rose garden, or just a clean kitchen, smell is very powerful. With this belief in mind, I have always been drawn to scented products and aromatherapy. When the opportunity arose a few years ago for me to start my own scented candle business, I wasted no time researching, designing, blending sample scents, and creating our first mock-ups to share with friends and family. After listening to feedback and making some tweaks, we set up at our first market. We have been in business ever since.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The thing I am most proud of is being able to create a pretty sustainable business from nothing. I literally started with a couple hundred dollars, an idea, and no business background. Even though I have only been in business since 2018, I have maintained through ups, downs, and COVID-19. Flame Candle started with 4 candles, and today we have 2 candle lines, room spray, bath and body products, collaborations with other amazing makers, and continue to try new things and grow. This was not easy. It takes many hours and failures before you get it just right and share with the world. I’ve learned to have patience, give yourself grace, and if you make one person’s day better, then it’s all worth it. I want people to know that Flame Candle is a company you can rely on to create the perfect self-care experience. We truly care how our clients feel about our product, and welcome any and all feedback to make sure we are creating the perfect one-of-a-kind product.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Considering I live in Austin now, I actually live in the DFW area for about 8 years. I visit often, and still have some of my best friends who live there. Recently, I visited some amazing restaurants and boutiques in Bishop Arts. Also, I’m a big fan of some of the old favorites like Ojeda’s, Gloria’s, and Bob’s Steak and Chophouse. In Austin, I would highly recommend a Grizzelda’s brunch, happy hour at Easy Tiger, and dinner at Swift’s Attic. Of course, there are many other places to choose from, but I think you can’t go wrong with these essentials.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shoutout my friend and co-collaborator Julie. Without her I would not have ever had the courage to start Flame Candle. She was my support, coach, thought partner, and friend. Thank you!
