We had the good fortune of connecting with Ama Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ama, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Around the age of 12 I went through a traumatic experience which changed me life forever, that experience led me to self harm. From the age of 12-24 I cut, I know this isn’t the best way to start my story but this is how everything happened. What I went through ruined my self esteem and I had multiple scars to prove it. I started wearing make-up to try and hide the fact that I was insecure and as well as to cover my scars. Back in 2017 I came up with the idea to start my own cosmetics line, however I didn’t know where to start or what to name it. After brainstorming and thinking of all the things I’ve been through (multiple suicide attempts and self harm) I came up with Mawusi Cosmetics. Mawusi is my middle name which is Ghanaian and means “in the hands of God” looking back on my life I realized that God has helped me through everything I’ve been through and that’s why I chose to self name my brand. I wanted to create a brand to help others who have been through things similar as myself to feel good again. All of my products excluding the SKIN collection have a direct correlation to the Bible whether it be being named after someone in the Bible or an actual Bible verse. My idea was always to uplift and bring peace to others the way I was able to find peace for myself.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is all of my products are handmade with love AND I use them. I feel that if you can’t stand behind your own product why would anybody else want to try it. Before I release anything to the public I try it on myself for at least 2-3 weeks to see what effects it has and the results it will tinder. I also always try to give back to my customers whether it be something free in their order or a discount code for their next purchase. I don’t think there’s any other business like mine who cares for customers as much as I do.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I honestly don’t go to many places, I’m a home body in every sense of the word. However a few of my favorite spots include BFF Asian Sports Bar & Grill, Imperial Hibachi, and Boomerjacks. I also enjoy going places like The Water Gardens and The Kimball Museum of Art. I love art and laid back places more than anything.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My boyfriend deserves so much credit it’s not even funny, so I’d like to thank Joseph Griffin for all his help and motivation along the way. Although I started my business in 2019 after siting on it for two years I took a year hiatus literally only two months after announcing my business. I met Joseph in September of 2019, I told him about my business and why I stopped and he encouraged me to start again and never give up. He is now my business partner and the creative director when it comes to a lot of the things we do. He’s also part of the reason I started my second business Chakra Mün Custom Creations, but this is of course about Mawusi Cosmetics. All in all I wouldn’t be who I am or where I am as far as this business goes without his love support and help through it all.
