We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenny James and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jenny, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Legacy Music Studio evolved after twenty years spent working in education and music. My first career was as an elementary classroom teacher with years teaching 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. After becoming a mom, I transitioned into teaching private piano lessons out of my home. And while I loved teaching piano one on one, I missed the energy, cooperative learning, and laughter that came from being around lots of students. Over time I actually found myself lonely, bored, and uninspired. But I also had birthed a dream during that time. I wanted a place where individual creative teachers could teach private music lessons in a shared space. This concept was based on the idea of mixing a classroom experience with private teaching areas- where all the teachers know all the students, and the students interact and learn from each other. We engage all learning styles and adapt all lessons to fit the individual student while still maintaining a high standard of music education. In 2017, Legacy Music Studio was established in Old Town Lewisville. It was also important to me to be in an area that valued community, family, and the fine arts. Each teacher at Legacy essentially runs their own studio of students. We share our teaching spaces and instruments. We have an enormous library of music, theory, and music history. And since I’m a former elementary teacher, we have a huge assortment of music thematic games, classroom manipulatives, and theory that reinforce every musical concept taught. Our goal each day is for every student to leave their lesson feeling better about themselves and their musical journey. Our studio name is significant too. We are committed to teaching the next generation of worship leaders, artists, and creatives. We know the lasting impact a teacher can have on a student. And the most exciting part for me is having former students now teaching at Legacy Music Studio.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Legacy Music Studio offers lessons taught in an energetic, nurturing environment where students gain experience with different genres of music, master recital pieces, and perform in various venues. Our teachers adapt their lessons to best fit the students’ learning style while creating an engaging, positive experience to keep students excited about their personal music journey. Our studio is set up to be more of an interactive, collaborative space where we learn from each other and are comfortable practicing and performing around each other. We have many private teaching spaces, but also like to spend some lesson time with other students and teachers. Growing a music studio can have it’s own set of challenges. Most of our new students come from “word of mouth” from our current Legacy families. We value the relationships we have with not only our students but with their families. And the 2020 pandemic brought Legacy a unique set of challenges. But through that time we were able to leverage technology and offer online lessons and continue to grow as a studio. Legacy Music Studio offers piano, voice, guitar, bass, drums, woodwind, brass, and production lessons. In the Summer of 2021 we will be moving to our new location (just two streets away) in a brand new facility with customized teaching spaces, classrooms, bigger production/recording rooms, in house photography/videography/media services and more. Our new studio is a fully renovated 1897 historic home now named Old Town Legacy House we share with Charles Tobias Recording and Trey Hernandez Media. We have the ability to take someone from beginning musical student all the way to recording artist.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love visiting downtowns of older cities in the metroplex. Downtown Grapevine, McKinney, the Denton Square and Old Town Lewisville are just a few of the many charming destinations of the DFW area. I love historical buildings that house shopping, eating, and places to hang out and create memories. These areas are where you can find true Mom & Pop businesses, local food & wine, fantastic murals, and unique shopping experiences. I also enjoy live music, theater, art vendors, festivals, parades, and other small town experiences unique to local downtowns.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Legacy Music Studio success is all thanks to our amazing Legacy teachers, students, and their families.
