We had the good fortune of connecting with Deidra Kindred and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deidra, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in Michigan, but raised in the great state of Texas. My mom was a single parent of four children and always instilled in us to go to college get a great career, but always have your plan A, B, and C. She was such an influential part of my life. I did have to grow up pretty fast to help her raise my brother and sisters. Watching her work and go back to college to get her degree in Marketing was inspiring. My plans were to obtain a degree as a physical therapist. So, I also was a single mom of one, but worked and went to college at this same time. I can’t really think of a time that I only worked one job until I was in my nursing internship. I remember quite vividly; I was up one evening writing a paper for class, my son was sleeping. I received a phone call from a dean at Texas Women’s University. He stated that he was looking at my grades and was wondering if I would change my major from physical therapy to nursing? All I had to do was write a 750 essay on what education meant to me and have it in his office in the morning. They would then give me a scholarship to pay for nursing school. WOW. This was after I had told several people on several occasions that I did not want to be a nurse. God is powerful. So here I am today. On my path for my purpose to make an impact to change the world’s view of healthcare, by teaching people to advocate and navigate the healthcare system.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Your Healthcare Nurse Advocates was established because of the tremendous gap in communication and confusion within the healthcare system. People are lost, confused and often times frustrated. I’ve witnessed this as a nurse professionally while still working in the system and on a personal level with my mom’s experiences. Advocacy is not a new concept, but is a new cutting edge business concept. What sets my company apart is that I am building a team of nurses that have speciality backgrounds in chronic disease processes for adults. Who better than a nurse to help someone navigate the healthcare system? I’m most proud of the fact that I get the chance to enhance the field of nursing and advocacy, by empowering the community and nurses themselves to be true advocates and teach people they have a voice that deserves to be recognized. Entrepreneurship is not easy, but as my mom quoted ” If it was easy, then everybody would do it, so why not you?” I overcame challenges thru my faith in God. Knowing without a doubt that this is my purpose and the mission is so important. Just keep pushing forward. I’m learning more from failures than successes. I also had to learn to stop standing in my own way. No excuses. I even wrote a memior to myself, so everytime I think about quiting I revisit it. ” Are You Standing In Your Way? Then M.O.V.E: Manage your Opportunities for your Vision to Empower.” Some of the lessons learned are to 1. build, build, build authentic relationships. 2. Never stop learning 3. Trust the process 4. Ask for help from others who are already where you want to be. 5. Seek out the right resources 6. Network the right way 6. Volunteering is a great ROI thru your time 7. take time off for yourself, you can’t give from an empty cup 8. Know your numbers financially. 9. Revisit goals frequently 10. Guard your circle of influence. I want the world to see my journey and know that change is a process. But, through persistence, perseverence, faith and consistency we can all make our mark and leave a legacy.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a really hard question in our present climate. To be honest, I’m still exploring the area myself, as my former thought process was to travel out of the country. Someplace with a beach and room service. LOL I love Dallas/Fort Worth. Downtown Fort Worth has really enhanced a lot of the restaurants and entertainment. The arts district in both cities is great for site seeing. I would suggest we venture out in the daytime to see some of the botanical gardens, water gardens and japanese gardens. The evenings would be for a restaurant with live entertainment.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
1. God and my mom 2. Startup Weekend Fort Worth March 2018 3. Darlisa Diltz with The Center North Texas/ The North Texas Entrepreneur Education and Training Center 4. 1 Million Cups Fort Worth 5. My sisters Denine Williams and Deshonique Williams 6. Many other close friends and accountability partners 7. Books by Jack Canfield, John Maxwell and many others
