We had the good fortune of connecting with Clay Dalheim and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Clay, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Well, traditionally insurance hasn’t been thought of as an appealing career to industry outsiders, but we are trying to change that. We have been able to recruit folks from all industries by showing them that a career in insurance can be rewarding both financially and on a personal level. Every day we get to sit down with business owners and figure out how they carved out their spot in their industry and figure out a plan on how they can protect what they have built.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am most proud of our people. Over the last couple of years our agency has grown quite a bit and while it has been hard work, it has been a lot of fun as well. Our industry has been stale and has looked pretty much the same for the last fifty years, so when we started we really wanted to sit down and look at how we could create a place that could attract the best people and change that stigma. I am proud of the fact that our best recruiting tool has been our own people. It makes me so happy every time I hear that our employees have told their friends in the industry that they have to come to work for BSBD! Good people truly attract good people and that has been the key to our growth.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would definitely say that the older partners in our firm (Mike Boyd, Tim Shackelford, David and Don Barnett) for having the vision and the drive to start an agency from scratch. After they sold their last agencies, the easy road would have been to stay put and coast the rest of their careers but they rolled up their sleeves and went to work. Also, a huge shoutout to Lucas Boyd (the President of the agency) for facilitating our growth and Kyle Dixon (who runs our Dallas office) for his leadership. It truly has been a collaborative effort and we hope to continue to build on our momentum in the marketplace.
