We had the good fortune of connecting with London Lawhon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi London, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks are always scary, but the vulnerable space created by putting yourself out there in new and uncomfortable situations is where opportunities flourish. In my career, every risk has led to a lesson learned and more often than not a new opportunity for my music. If I wouldn’t have taken the risk in auditioning for American Idol after trying multiple times, I wouldn’t have met lifelong friends/connections in the industry, I wouldn’t have had the same performance opportunities that followed, and I wouldn’t have gained the confidence to be my own boss in the industry. If I wouldn’t have taken the risk of asking my cute co-worker to write new songs with me and back me up at gigs on a guitar, I wouldn’t be married to my co-writer right now. The risks never fail to reward!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My name is London Lawhon, I’m a 22 year old singer/songwriter based out of Houston. Over the past 10 years I’ve been performing and writing all over the country. My personal style is Alternative Rock with a focus on powerhouse vocals and showmanship on stage! I am currently releasing new music that I am very excited to share. My next single is called “Wanted” and releases on all platforms 12/04/2020, co-written by my husband Coulter Lee Brown and produced by Zachary Manno! Any career over time has its challenges, but today the music industry is bigger/more diverse than ever because anyone could create the next biggest hit from the comfort of their bedroom. Finding new ways to gain fans in the ever-expanding pool of artists popping up has been a struggle. How do I define my style? How do I stand out next to people with a huge team curating their every move? How do I do this all during a pandemic? The lesson I’ve learned is it’s always about the connection with the audience. Live shows have decreased significantly but luckily I still have multiple a weekend, so I use those opportunities as moments to connect as much as possible and draw people into my world. I want them all to know that music isn’t a hobby, it’s an obsession for me. I want them to feel like I’ve given them a part of myself even for a moment during a performance because ultimately they’re the reason I keep trying after all this time.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting the area, I would always start out at an amazing coffee shop like Throughgood Coffee in The Heights where they alway have amazing food trucks. Who doesn’t love breakfast tacos?!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Huge thank you to my family and friends for pushing me to continue booking and chasing my dreams throughout a global pandemic, a wedding, and now pregnancy! To my husband/guitarist/best friend, thank you for believing in me and always carrying the equipment. Thank you to all venues and venue owners who have opened their doors to live music and kept it alive in Texas even through these crazy times. Love you all!
