We had the good fortune of connecting with Myeisha Meeks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Myeisha, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success was to make sure all of my clients looked, and felt better than they did before walking through my door!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For years, people knew me as the hairstylist and barber for the Dallas Cowboys. I styled and cut their hair for many seasons. I started working at Sport Clips in Las Colinas back in 2002, which was co-owned by former Dallas Cowboy Jay Nováček. With Jay involved, he offered free haircuts to everyone associated with the Cowboys organization, including players, coaches, and staff. I built quite the clientele during my time there, and I often had clients waiting up to two hours to sit in my chair. I realized I needed to branch out and open my own salon. Once I overcame my fear, I did just that and opened MyeStylz in 2004 at Hightower Salons in Irving, TX. This marked the beginning of my success as an entrepreneur.

It wasn’t easy, as there weren’t many female barbers at that time. Coming from Sport Clips, I primarily cut straight hair, but moving to Hightower allowed me to explore a wider range of styles. I remember cutting hair for a guy named Kenyon Coleman. His wife sent him to me for a basic haircut. I’ll never forget when he walked into the locker room; the guys were asking him who did his hair. He told them it was a girl from Sport Clips who had moved to Hightower, and they couldn’t believe it. Several of them stalked my salon for weeks before they finally gained the nerve to let me cut their hair. Once I did, it was game over!

Being the first at anything can feel a bit strange to me. However, I’ve come to realize that I was doing something unique at that time. Female barbers didn’t receive the respect they deserved back then. I’m proud that times have changed and that women now occupy a prominent place in barbering. I’m also proud that men have come to understand that women can often cut hair better than men! We tend to pay attention to detail in a way that not many male barbers do.

I wouldn’t be who I am today without the clients I had! From the children I watched grow, the women I got to know, to the men who impacted my life, who you allow into your space is incredibly important. I feel blessed to have had such wonderful clients.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had friends coming to visit, we would do a food tour in the Dallas-Fort Worth area! We would first stop by Vegan Food House for some of the best vegan cuisine in the city. After that, we would head to Hutchins BBQ in McKinney, TX, because you can’t come to Texas without trying BBQ!

Next, we could check out a show at the Dallas Theater Center and take a stroll around the Arts Plaza. We’d also visit the food trucks at Klyde Warren Park. Then, we would make our way to Korea Town in Carrollton for some authentic Korean food at Kurobuta, which we really love.

Of course, we would take some time to explore H Mart, just for fun. Finally, no trip to the metroplex would be complete without visiting Boulder Adventure Park, which is absolutely amazing!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t have a story if it weren’t for my granny! She inspired me to pursue a career in the hair industry. Growing up, I spent countless hours in her salon, watching her do hair, and I knew that one day I would follow in her footsteps. She has been my biggest supporter and mentor throughout my journey in this profession. Even when I transitioned away from hair, she supported whatever I decided to pursue next.
