We had the good fortune of connecting with Cherie Turner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cherie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Mommy Scrubs was born from my own experience as a breastfeeding mom working in healthcare. I quickly realized how inconvenient and uncomfortable it was to pump in standard scrubs, not to mention how much time it took to change in and out of them just to use my pump. I knew I wasn’t alone in that struggle, and I felt called to create a solution. Starting Mommy Scrubs wasn’t just about filling a gap in the market, it was about supporting moms like me who are doing their best to show up for both their families and their careers. I wanted to design something that gave women back their time, privacy, and confidence during a demanding season of life. This business is rooted in service, solving a problem for moms who deserve to feel seen, supported, and empowered at work and beyond.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Mommy Scrubs is a functional apparel brand created to support breastfeeding moms, especially those working in healthcare and other demanding professions. Our signature product is a pump-friendly scrub top that allows moms to pump without undressing, helping them save time, stay comfortable, and feel confident on the job. What sets us apart is that Mommy Scrubs was created by a mom, for moms and I am so proud to be the only woman of color in this space. I’ve lived the experience of trying to balance patient care and pumping, and I knew firsthand how under-served this need was. Our scrubs are not just clothing, they’re a solution, a support system, and a small way to say, we see you, mama. I’m incredibly proud that we launched during World Breastfeeding Month in August 2024, and we’re approaching our first anniversary with a growing community of moms in scrubs who tell us, “This makes my day easier.” That’s everything to me. Getting to this point wasn’t easy. As a full-time Occupational Therapist, wife, and mom of two, I’ve had to juggle a lot. I bootstrapped the business and leaned into mentorship and support networks through local organizations. Each program taught me something new, from legal steps to pitching to believing in my own voice.
The biggest lessons I’ve learned? Start before you’re ready. Stay rooted in your “why.” And don’t be afraid to ask for help. What I want the world to know is that Mommy Scrubs isn’t just about selling scrubs. It’s about supporting mothers who are doing their best to show up every day, for their families and for their work. We’re here to make that journey just a little easier, a little more dignified, and a lot more seen.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m incredibly grateful for the many people and organizations who have helped shape this journey. First and foremost, I thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for giving me the vision for Mommy Scrubs. And to my husband, Sammy, for his support and encouragement through challenges and milestones has meant everything. My children, Trae and Madi, are my biggest motivators. Mommy Scrubs was created because of them and for moms like me who want to nurture their families while still pursuing their purpose. They’re the “why” behind it all. I also have to shout out the Texas Woman’s University Center for Women Entrepreneurs. Receiving my first grant through the StartHER program was a turning point. From that first boost to completing the Kaufman FastTrac program, they’ve believed in my vision from day one.
I’m also grateful for: The Dallas Mavericks Business Assist Program, The DEC Network’s WE Dallas and Your Startup Cohorts, and The Manifest Your Purpose Business Summit. Each of these gave me not just tools and funding, but community. Finally, to every fellow mompreneur, nurse, and healthcare worker who has shared her story or simply said “I needed this,” thank you. Mommy Scrubs wouldn’t be what it is without you.
