We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Kincaid and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Change is inevitable. Things will change with me, or things will change without me! I view implementing change as a risk because it usually takes faith and effort. I’m a faith girl 🙂 I believe God is using me and my experience to impact peoples’ lives in a positive way. This means I continually need to take risks that sharpen my growth and be my best for the patients I serve. For example, as a bedside nurse I stepped into the Charge Nurse role with great pride in serving my coworkers. I took on the challenge of becoming a Nurse Practitioner and going through the tedious process of grad school. I moved into a functional and holistic space, not knowing if patients would come. It’s been a fantastic transition and I’ve been able to serve so many families! Failure doesn’t mean losing, it means learning. I can always reassess the vision and move in a new direction. I’m not scared to take risks and you shouldn’t be either!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a functional, integrative Family Nurse Practitioner is the MOST fun type of nursing I’ve ever experienced! I am constantly growing and learning to be on top of evidence based practice, while staying true to the roots of simple and effective ways of healing and health. I am constantly asking the question “why” and digging deeper into upstream dysfunction, that may be causing symptoms downstream. I provide personalized plans for each of my patients that typically include nutrition, lifestyle, and supplements, based on their personal health goals. I celebrate the wins with my patients and encourage them to take ownership in their health. I have studied at the School of Applied Functional Medicine and spent thousands of hours researching all types of medicine. I think through all of my experience and studying, I have found that esoteric science is fascinating and necessary , but true health begins with setting a solid foundation of simplicity…eating whole foods, drinking enough water, taking minerals and vitamins, spending time outdoors, getting regenerative sleep, and spending time with loved ones. Things like that cannot be overlooked!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh we would have a blast eating great food and shopping around. Starting Friday night-dinner at the Local Yocal in Mckinney, TX. They have lots of whole food and gluten free options, plus fantastic bbq. I have a 3, 5, and 15 year old and an amazing husband so I’m all about family fun! We’d have to take the family to the Mckinney Farmer’s Market at Chestnut Square on Saturday morning. It’s open from 8am-noon and offers organic produce, farm fresh eggs, and grassfed meats. We could extend our shopping and hanging on the downtown Mckinney square and have lunch on the patio at Loyo Burger-Delicious! After all that shopping and walking, while the kids are napping of course, I would take her to my favorite organic facial in Frisco to Cordell Christian Organic Salon. The weekend wouldn’t be complete without dinner reservations at Harvest at the Masonic in downtown Mckinney. It’s a beautiful farm-to-table restaurant, owned by philanthropist and restaurateur, Rick Wells. He has such a great vision, executed in his businesses, and Harvest is nothing short of that!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To the most brilliant Doctor I know-Dr. Gamboa. She took a chance on me as a new graduate, instilled wisdom into me with her broad knowledge and extensive medical experience. She is everything you would want in a doctor and advocates on behalf of her patients. She is trustworthy and kind and cares so much! She has an amazing, thriving practice and many of her patients never leave her.
Then, Michelle Rowton. She is the owner of Wonderfully Made Wellness Sanctuary and has been a mentor and friend of mine for 15 years. Her vision is to advocate on behalf of patients and their families and she fulfills that so well. She was a care flight RN, and a NICU NP for 15 years. She specializes in complex patients age 2 and under. We have so much fun together at the office in downtown Mckinney. Sometimes Jana, the Nurse Practitioner in our Dallas location, will join us and the trio really is dynamic. It’s like a thinktank. We share research and ideas for complex cases. We all have different personalities with the same goal-to use our gifts, talents and experiences to help as many families as we can!
