We had the good fortune of connecting with Frankie Black and Amanda Pharis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Frankie and Amanda, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We are in a phase of life where many of our friends are having babies, so we just naturally started helping with registries and nursery organizations. During one of our friend’s pregnancies we pulled together an excel spreadsheet and had a bunch of other mothers contribute their recommendations and commentary on registry items – that sheet was shared among friends hundreds of times. Shortly after that a friend asked for help with her nursery following her baby shower and thus the full picture of what MOMMY could be was born!
What should our readers know about your business?
Our business was built on the foundation of helping mothers by tackling some of the more daunting tasks of nesting and of motherhood in general. MOMMY Planning Services provides registry and organization assistance to mothers in whatever way they may need. We can build your registry from top to bottom or we can narrow down the broad expanse of baby items to a handful of choices. We can organize your room completely, including a few loads of laundry, or we can simply refresh a space that your kiddo has lived in for years. By removing some stress from these key areas, mothers are able to focus more on themselves and their families.
We both organized and advised on these things long before starting our business, so virtually “opening our doors” for business was a no brainer. When you find something that you love to do and feel passionate that you are doing meaningful work, each day bring a lot of excitement and joy. But do not think that every moment is easy or fun. Business is hard no matter how passionate you are. You have to be willing to put in the time, you need to have the right partner that compliments your shortcomings and that you compliment theirs, someone you can be candid with and know you can work through any issue. In the end, you always have to know that your vision, your dream, is worth the effort.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in the 12th largest city in the nation provides us with a multitude of options when it comes to things to do! I would start with a weekend in the stockyards – spending Friday evening at a nice meal in Mule Alley and finish up at the local rodeo. Saturday day, we would head back to the stockyards for a day of shopping and make sure to see the cattle drive! We would end the evening with dinner at Lonesome Dove and then head to Billy Bob’s for boot scootin’.
If we have a full week to entertain, we would make sure to hit up the amazing Zoo, Kimbell Art Museum, Museum of Science, Fort Worth Water Gardens and TCU’S campus (go Frogs!). Depending on the season, we would venture to Arlington for either a Cowboys or Rangers game!
Fort Worth is a city of possibilities. The slow pace and kind people make everyone feel right at home! We feel so fortunate to live in this city and be able to start our business amongst some of the most successful, humble and kind business owners there are.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
MOMMY would never have come to be without the encouragement of our contributors and other mommies! Motherhood is not something that you can tackle alone; your friends, your tribe, even the other mother you lock eyes with when shopping with a screaming child, they are all a support system that you can never put into words. It is thanks to other mothers that we are able to have this business and do our part to help make motherhood as stress-free as possible.
