We had the good fortune of connecting with Alice Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alice, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My desire is to help inform and support above all else. Experiencing two different births myself changed my entire outlook surrounding prenatal healthcare. After my second, I knew I needed to be involved. Insert The Purposeful Birth; Doula care. Creating this business gives me a hands on, integrated part in supporting birthing people to do exactly as their body was designed. Having a business model of my own, backed by certification, gives me the ability to create the space for true independence in caring for people exactly as they desire to be cared for, not how everyone believes they need to be cared for.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a birth doula that follows evidence-based practices and self-intuitive care for my clients. This looks like giving my clients the most recent information for their concerns and questions, while also allowing them to ultimately follow their intuition on how to birth their babies. Doulas have a sort of taboo connotation attached to us but it is one to be broken. The purpose of a doula is to support. My practice can look like opening communication avenues between clients and their care providers, as well as between spouses. It can be physical comforts such a massage and movements for labor progressions or verbal comforts such as affirmations and explaining. But above all else, doulas listen. We are there to help you birth your baby in whatever way feels most safe and comforting to you. As a doula, my heart is to be there for YOU when everyone else is baby focused and speaking AT you. This has been heart pressed through my own pregnancies. Having two small children of my own means that there were more variables to consider in starting a business but also that I have two tiny girls that may decide to birth babies one day and I get to show them that they deserve support. So as hard as it can be, it is more than worth it to value this miraculous opportunity to bring new life. We should be treating birth as a physiological thing that sometimes needs medical attention and not the other way around.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a Texas girl through and through, especially Dallas area which means I love Brunch and the Cowboys! We have to start our week out at The Star in Frisco. Tupelo Honey’s brunch is to die for then we must pop over to Ascension for an iced coffee before shopping around all the fun shops and cruising through a tour at the practice facility. On day two we have to get out into nature and get our adrenaline pumping so we are heading straight to Go Ape Zipline in Plano, TX. This is a sure fire way to work up an appetite which means heading straight to RA Sushi Bar. It also would not be a visit to Texas if we did not go to the Fort Worth Stockyards. A must is happy hour at the Hotel Drover, followed by cruising around to the local speakeasies like Thompson’s Bookstore. We would finish off our night with some dancing and singing at Billy Bob’s Texas. Last but not least is a relaxing day at King’s Spa in Dallas to get pampered and re-center.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost I want to shoutout my husband, Justin. He has walked through and encouraged me every step of the way without a single hesitation. He is a sounding board, loving support, and unwavering cheerleader no matter the path but has showed a special level of encouragement as I leapt into my passion.
I would also be amiss to not mention both my mom and my mother-in-law. These two women have been so supportive and shown me a level of “work-hard” and internal trust that cannot be explained. I am eternally grateful to have them both to look up to in motherhood and now as a business owning woman.
Last but not least, I want to say thank you to Margie Wallis of Frisco Birth Center. As a woman in birth work, she has uplifted me and spoke so many kind and encouraging things that built my confidence in starting The Purposeful Birth.
